Chapter 4 - A Family Story Rewritten
For most of Annabelle’s life, Diane had described Thomas and Claire as reckless dreamers.
Thomas had supposedly driven too fast the night of the accident. Claire had supposedly encouraged him to ignore financial warnings. Their deaths, Diane often said, were the predictable result of selfish choices.
The recording device from the drawer told a different story.
Eleanor found an old charger, and after several attempts, the machine flickered to life.
Thomas’s voice filled the study.
He sounded tired but calm.
“Diane has asked me to merge the trust with the company reserve. I refused. Claire believes she has already moved money through temporary accounts. We are meeting Samuel tomorrow to change the trustee.”
Claire’s voice followed.
“If anything happens before the documents are filed, Eleanor must protect Annabelle.”
The recording ended with the sound of a door opening.
Then Diane’s voice, younger but unmistakable, said, “You two always did enjoy making me the villain.”
Annabelle sat frozen.
Samuel warned that the recording did not prove Diane caused the accident. It did prove motive, deception, and knowledge of the trust.
They searched public records and discovered the police report from the crash had been amended three days after the incident. The original investigating officer had noted that Thomas’s brakes showed possible tampering. The final report removed that observation.
The amendment had been requested after a call from Vale Mercer’s attorney at the time.
Diane.
Annabelle felt the room tilt.
Eleanor knelt before her. “We do not know what happened that night.”
“She lied about everything.”
“Yes.”
“She raised me.”
“She controlled you,” Eleanor said. “Those are not the same thing.”
Annabelle closed her eyes.
For years, she had believed loyalty meant enduring pain without complaint. Now she understood Diane had taught her that definition because it served Diane.
