Chapter 1 - The Daughter Who Stayed Quiet

Three weeks earlier, Annabelle Vale had stood outside the glass doors of Vale Mercer Financial with a cardboard box in her arms.
Inside were the remains of eight years of work: a framed photograph of her late parents, three notebooks filled with client notes, a chipped coffee mug, and a small brass key she had never managed to identify.
The security guard avoided her eyes.
Her dismissal had been announced that morning by Diane Vale, company president, Annabelle’s mother, and the woman who had told the board that her daughter was unstable, careless, and responsible for a missing two hundred thousand dollars.
None of it was true.
Annabelle had discovered irregular withdrawals from a dormant trust account connected to her parents’ estate. Before she could finish tracing them, her access disappeared. Her office was searched. Her company laptop was confiscated. By noon, Diane had transformed Annabelle from whistleblower into suspect.
“You should be grateful I’m not pressing charges,” Diane had whispered in the elevator.
Annabelle still felt the pressure of her mother’s fingers around her wrist.
At thirty-one, Annabelle was old enough to know she should leave. Yet Diane had controlled every part of her life since the accident that killed Annabelle’s father, Thomas, and her mother, Claire, when Annabelle was twelve.
Diane had become her legal guardian. She had paid for school, chosen her friends, approved her jobs, and reminded her constantly that survival was a debt.
That evening, Annabelle returned to the small apartment Diane owned and found an eviction notice taped to the door.
She sat on the hallway floor until the lights clicked off automatically.

Then her phone rang.
“Come to my house,” Eleanor said. “And bring everything your mother told you to throw away.”
