Chapter 9 - The House of False Documents
The investigation expanded far beyond the hospital staircase.
Police obtained warrants for Daniel’s office, Margaret’s home, and the Mercer Foundation’s financial records.
Inside Daniel’s locked cabinet, investigators found copies of Elena’s medical reports, preliminary guardianship applications, and forged letters claiming she suffered from severe cognitive problems.
They also found her missing leather folder.
Margaret’s house contained original invoices from the false consulting companies and drafts of documents transferring control of Elena’s trust assets to Daniel.
The sealed envelope had not been their only target.
They had planned to isolate Elena inside the private recovery facility, restrict her visitors, and use a friendly doctor to declare her incapable.
Once Daniel became temporary guardian, he intended to approve a ninety-nine-year property agreement between Elena’s trust and the Mercer Foundation.
The agreement would have placed the hospital land under Mercer control for a fraction of its true value.
Daniel had expected Elena to remain confused, frightened, and obedient.
He had not expected Nathan.
He had not expected Tessa.
He had not expected Luis.
Most of all, he had not expected Elena to stop doubting herself.
Daniel and Margaret were charged with assault, attempted fraud, forgery, obstruction, and conspiracy. Additional financial charges followed after the audit confirmed years of stolen funds.
Their lawyers attempted to negotiate.
Daniel offered to return part of the money if Elena refused to testify.
Margaret sent letters claiming she had always loved Elena like a daughter.
Elena returned every message unopened.
At the trial, Camera Seven’s recording was played before the jury.
Daniel refused to look at the screen.
Margaret cried whenever the jurors watched her push Elena, but her tears no longer controlled the room.
Elena testified for four hours.
She did not raise her voice.
She did not exaggerate.
She simply described how control had entered her marriage disguised as protection.
When the guilty verdicts were read, Daniel finally looked at her.
He seemed to expect anger.
Elena felt none.
