Chapter 1 - The Perfect Mercer Marriage
Three weeks earlier, Elena Mercer had believed the worst part of her life was over.
She had undergone emergency surgery after doctors discovered internal complications from an untreated condition. The operation had been successful, but recovery would take time.
Daniel had played the role of devoted husband perfectly.
He brought flowers to her private room, spoke gently to the doctors, and posted photographs online thanking everyone for their prayers.
Visitors praised him for never leaving Elena’s side.
What they did not know was that Daniel disappeared every night after visiting hours.
They did not know he complained about the cost of her treatment.
They did not know he had already asked three doctors whether Elena’s medication could make her confused.
Most importantly, they did not know he had brought his mother into Elena’s hospital room while Elena was sleeping and searched through her belongings.
Elena woke briefly that night and saw Margaret standing near the cabinet.
“What are you doing?” Elena whispered.
Margaret turned with a pleasant smile. “Looking for your insurance card, dear.”
“My insurance information is already registered.”
“You should rest.”
The next morning, Elena’s leather document folder was missing.
Inside it had been a copy of her late father’s trust agreement, recent bank statements, and a sealed letter from attorney Nathan Brooks.
When Elena confronted Daniel, he kissed her forehead.
“You probably left it at home.”
“I brought it here.”
“You were in pain. You don’t remember everything clearly.”
The words sounded reasonable.
That was Daniel’s greatest talent.
He never denied Elena’s reality directly. He simply softened the edges until she questioned whether it had existed at all.
Elena had married him six years earlier, shortly after her father’s death.
Daniel was charming, intelligent, and ambitious. He had promised to protect Elena from relatives and business partners who suddenly became interested in her inheritance.
For a while, she believed he had.
Then the rules began.
Daniel managed the accounts because finances stressed her.
Daniel approved her travel because he worried about her safety.
Daniel answered legal calls because recovery from grief had made her vulnerable.
