Chapter 8 - What the Camera Saw
Police officers arrived within minutes.
Daniel insisted the recording could not be viewed without authorization from the Mercer Foundation.
Luis informed him that the hospital’s emergency evidence policy allowed security footage to be preserved and released to law enforcement after a reported assault.
The footage was played in a private conference room.
Elena sat in a wheelchair beside Tessa and Nathan.
Daniel and Margaret sat across the table with an attorney who had arrived too late to control the situation.
On the monitor, Camera Seven showed everything clearly.
Margaret taking the envelope.
Elena following at a careful pace.
Daniel grabbing Elena’s arm.
Margaret shoving her.
Daniel stepping out of the way.
Then came the most damaging moment.
Before the nurses reached Elena, the camera’s microphone captured Daniel whispering to his mother.
“Say she attacked you.”
Margaret answered, “What about the camera?”
Daniel looked directly toward the security dome.
“I told Luis to erase it.”
No one spoke after the recording ended.
Daniel’s attorney closed his eyes.
Margaret began to shake her head.
“That is not what happened.”
The detective replayed the final ten seconds.
Margaret’s denial became meaningless.
Daniel turned toward Luis.
“You work for the foundation.”
“I work for the hospital,” Luis replied.
“I can have you fired.”
Luis smiled sadly.
“You tried that last month.”
The detective asked Daniel and Margaret to stand.
Margaret immediately pointed at her son.
“This was Daniel’s plan.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You pushed Elena.”
“You told me she would take everything from us.”
“You stole the envelope.”
“You forged her signatures!”
Their alliance ended in less than a minute.
Each tried to save themselves by exposing the other.
Elena listened quietly.
For years, she had believed they were powerful because they were united.
