Chapter 7 - Sirens at the Lilacs

When Caroline returned to consciousness, the sky was no longer a tunnel. It was a white ceiling moving above her.
Paramedics rolled her through the house on a stretcher. An oxygen mask covered her mouth. She tried to lift a hand, but straps held her safely in place.
“Baby?” she asked.
One paramedic leaned close. “Heartbeat is strong. Save your breath.”
Beyond him, Deputy Ortega walked backward, keeping her in sight. Dirt covered the knees of his uniform.
“Luke?” Caroline managed.
“In custody.”
“Diane?”
“In custody.”
“Mara?”
Ortega's eyes shifted.
The stretcher passed through the front door. Neighbors stood along the sidewalk, some filming, some crying. Red and blue light washed over the quiet suburban houses.
“Mara ran,” Ortega said. “We have units searching.”
Caroline tried to tell him about the second object beneath the dirt. Her tongue felt too large.
“Phone,” she whispered.
“We recovered it.”
“Other phone.”
The paramedic told her not to speak. The ambulance doors closed.
At the hospital, doctors treated dehydration, bruising, and muscle compression. A fetal monitor filled the room with the swift rhythm of her daughter's heart. Caroline watched each rise and fall on the screen until Nora arrived.
Nora's bruised jaw had turned purple. She sat beside the bed and took Caroline's hand.
“The original recorder was authentic,” she said. “Luke and Diane were arrested before they abducted you. They used a contractor inside the sheriff's evidence unit to switch the emergency phone and create the cabin diversion.”
“They were already under arrest?”
“Warrants had been issued. Officers had not reached them yet.”
Caroline closed her eyes. “Chen?”
“Concussed, furious, alive.”
“Mara put another phone in the hole.”
Nora leaned closer. “You saw her?”
“Felt it. Left hand.”
“Ortega's team dug around you carefully. They found only the emergency phone Luke smashed.”
“There was something else.”
Nora did not argue. “I will tell him.”
Later, Ortega entered carrying two clear evidence bags. One contained the shattered black phone. The other held a silver device caked with soil.
“This was eight inches below where your left hand had been,” he said. “We missed it during the rescue and found it when we processed the hole.”
Caroline stared at the silver phone.
“It isn't mine.”
“It belongs to Mara Bell.”
“She buried it with me.”
“It recorded forty-three minutes of audio and transmitted a backup to an account we have not identified.”
He played a short section. Luke's voice filled the hospital room.
Tell us where the deed is, or the dirt stays.
Then Diane.
Make sure her hands are trapped. Rose nearly escaped because her hands were free.
Caroline gripped the blanket. “Rose?”
Ortega stopped the recording.
“That is why I came. Your mother-in-law's words may connect this to your aunt's death.”
Rose had died after falling from a garden ladder. Luke found her. Diane organized the funeral before Caroline could return from a work trip. Everyone called it a tragic accident.
“Exhume her,” Caroline said.
Nora looked at her. “Caroline.”
“Do it.”
Ortega nodded slowly. “The medical examiner is seeking authorization.”
The door opened again. Investigator Chen entered with a bandage at her temple.
“I found Mara,” she said.
Caroline sat higher despite the pain.
“Where?”
“She walked into a state police post twenty minutes ago. She has asked for immunity.”
“For saving me?”
“For helping abduct you.”
Chen placed a photograph on the bed tray. It showed Mara's hands. Dirt was packed beneath her nails.
“She says she helped dig the hole,” Chen continued. “She also says Diane ordered Rose's death and Luke carried it out.”
Nora asked, “What does she want in exchange?”
“Protection from Holloway.”
Caroline studied Mara's photograph. “Not protection from Luke?”
“No.” Chen's expression tightened. “She says Luke and Diane are middlemen. Holloway paid Luke to obtain the property, but the person who ordered your burial was not either of them.”
“Who was it?”
“Mara will identify the person only in a secured interview.”
The monitor beside Caroline's bed accelerated.
Nora rested a hand on her arm. “You do not need to solve everything tonight.”
“They put my child in the ground.”
“And you brought her out.”
Those words broke something open. Caroline turned her face toward the window and wept without shame.
By morning, Luke, Diane, and two contractors faced charges for kidnapping, unlawful restraint, aggravated assault, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. Mara was held separately. News vans lined the street outside the hospital.
The public story seemed complete: a greedy husband, his controlling mother, a mistress, a pregnant wife, and a house worth more than love.
It was a story people could understand in a headline.
Then the prosecutor called Nora.
The silver phone had finished uploading its backup.

The recording continued for eleven minutes after police entered the garden. During the chaos, it captured a voice coming through Diane's hidden earpiece.
The voice said, “If Caroline survives, open Rose's grave before she does.”
