Chapter 13 - The Name Diane Chose

Caroline did not sleep that night.

By morning, she understood why Diane had chosen Elena's name. A dead or missing woman could not deny an accusation. A daughter desperate for her mother might destroy her own credibility defending her.

Caroline gave the prosecutor one answer.

“Make her prove it.”

Diane produced no photograph, payment, message, or meeting. She claimed all instructions came through altered calls. Luke admitted he had never heard anyone identify the Director. Then state police captured Mark Kelso at a rural airstrip with the stolen deed and three passports.

Kelso's testimony ended Diane's bargain.

“She called everybody Director when she wanted obedience,” he said. “Sometimes there was a voice. Sometimes she played a recording. None of us knew who was above Holloway, or if anyone was.”

The jury returned after nine hours.

Luke was found guilty on every kidnapping and assault count. Diane was found guilty of conspiracy, kidnapping, evidence tampering, and attempted murder. Their courtroom betrayal also gave prosecutors the final leverage in Rose's case. Luke pleaded guilty to moving Rose's body and concealing her death. Diane was indicted for Rose's murder after fibers, recordings, and Luke's statement placed the weapon in her hand.

When the verdicts were read, Caroline felt no triumph. She felt space opening around her, the kind that appears after a loud machine finally stops.

Luke asked to speak before sentencing.

“I loved my wife,” he said. “I lost myself trying to save my company.”

Caroline looked at the man who had pressed soil against her pregnant body.

The judge answered for her.

“Love does not require a shovel.”

Luke received forty-two years. Diane received life after entering a later plea in Rose's murder. Mara accepted twelve years, with credit for cooperation and protection for her brother. She wrote Caroline an apology that did not ask for forgiveness.

Caroline kept it because accountability mattered, but she never answered.

Adrian Holloway remained in federal custody as dozens of families joined the case against his company. The county voided Caroline's forged transfer. The house, the garden, and the ground beneath the lilacs were hers again.

Yet one question survived every verdict.

Who had spoken through Diane's earpiece after the police arrived?

Voice analysis ruled out Diane, Luke, Mara, Adrian, and Kelso.

It did not rule out Elena Mercer.
