Chapter 9 - The Drawer Behind the Drawer)

Derek was released pending further investigation.

The recorded statements were disturbing but not enough by themselves to hold him indefinitely.

Margaret returned home.

The protective order remained active.

Claire was furious.

Rachel reminded her that cases were built piece by piece.

Claire no longer wanted pieces.

She wanted the entire truth.

Police searched the downstairs bathroom again.

At first they found nothing.

Then one detective removed the vanity drawer.

Behind it was a narrow recessed compartment.

Empty.

Recently emptied.

But there were scrape marks along the wood and adhesive residue where something had been attached.

Margaret had cleaned it out.

Still, forensic technicians found one fragment of paper trapped behind a bracket.

The fragment contained part of a name.

...aire Bennett.

And a date.

The date was three weeks in the future.

Claire stared at it.

"What happens on that date?"

No one knew.

Rachel checked court calendars.

Nothing.

Hospital schedules.

Nothing.

Bank records.

Nothing.

Then Dr. Meyers called.

"Your original due date before the ultrasound adjustment."

Claire went silent.

Early in the pregnancy, the estimated due date had changed slightly.

The fragment showed the old date.

"Why would they use that?"

Rachel asked.

Claire's answer came slowly.

"Because they prepared the papers months ago."

That meant Derek and Margaret had planned this long before Claire began resisting.

Long before canceled appointments.

Long before missing keys.

Possibly from the beginning of the pregnancy.

Rachel requested additional records from Bennett Family Holdings.

The company resisted.

A judge ordered production.

The records revealed payments to a private investigator.

Payments to a legal document preparation service.

Payments to a medical consultant.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Dr. Samuel Grayson.

Claire recognized it.

"He was the specialist Margaret wanted me to see."

Rachel looked up.

The connection was immediate.

Dr. Grayson had never treated Claire.

But Bennett Family Holdings had paid him twice.

Rachel subpoenaed records.

Dr. Grayson's attorney fought back.

Then the payments became public in a court filing.

Within forty eight hours, Dr. Grayson agreed to speak.

He insisted he had done nothing illegal.

Margaret had contacted him regarding hypothetical pregnancy related psychiatric concerns.

Derek later asked what conditions might justify emergency medical decision authority.

Dr. Grayson claimed he refused to provide a diagnosis without examining Claire.

"But he took their money," Claire said.

Rachel nodded.

"For consultation."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Consultation about how to control a woman he'd never met."

The doctor also revealed something else.

Derek had asked whether severe anxiety could be documented after a traumatic incident.

"What traumatic incident?" Rachel asked.

Dr. Grayson claimed he did not know.

Claire did.

Or she feared she did.

They had been planning to create one.

A crisis.

Something dramatic enough to make Claire appear unstable.

The tire.

The lost job complaint.

The surveillance.

Each incident increased stress.

Each reaction could be documented.

Rachel said, "They weren't waiting for you to break down."

Claire finished the thought.

"They were trying to make me break down."

That evening, Claire sat alone in Jenna's guest room.

She placed one hand on her belly.

Her daughter kicked.

Claire smiled.

"You picked a complicated family."

Another kick.

Claire laughed softly.

For several minutes, she felt almost normal.

Then the prepaid phone rang.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Answered.

No one spoke.

Claire waited.

Then a child's voice whispered.

"Is this Claire?"

Claire sat upright.

"Yes."

"My mom said I wasn't supposed to call."

"Who is this?"

A pause.

"Lily."

Claire's heart stopped.

Evelyn's daughter.

Derek's daughter.

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Where's your mom?"

"Talking to the police again."

Claire relaxed slightly.

"Why are you calling me?"

Lily hesitated.

"Because Grandma Margaret came to my school."

Claire stood.

"When?"

"Last week."

"Did your mom know?"

"No."

"What did Margaret say?"

Lily's voice became smaller.

"She said I had a baby sister coming."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Anything else?"

"She asked if Mom still kept the box."

"What box?"

"I don't know."

"Did you tell your mom this?"

"Not yet."

"Tell her immediately."

Lily hesitated.

Then whispered, "Grandma also said something weird."

"What?"

"She said babies belong where they were promised."

Claire felt cold.

"Promised to whom?"

"I asked."

"And?"

"She said Grandpa."

Claire frowned.

"Derek's father?"

Margaret's husband, Thomas Bennett, had supposedly died fifteen years earlier.

Before Evelyn married Derek.

Claire had seen photographs.

A serious man with gray eyes.

Derek rarely discussed him.

"Lily, did she say anything else?"

"She said Grandpa had rules."

"What rules?"

"I don't know."

A sound came through the phone.

Evelyn calling Lily's name.

Lily said quickly, "I have to go."

The call ended.

Claire immediately contacted Evelyn.

Within minutes they were discussing Margaret's visit to the school.

Then Claire asked about the box.

Evelyn became silent.

"What box?"

Another pause.

Then Evelyn said, "My sister kept evidence for me."

"Evidence of what?"

"Everything."

"Where is it?"

"I thought it was destroyed."

"Why?"

"Because after my sister died, her house was burglarized."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"But Lily thinks you still have it."

"No. She heard us talking years ago."

"What was inside?"

"Recordings. Letters. Copies of documents."

"From Derek?"

"And Margaret."

Claire sat down.

"Why would Margaret ask if you still have it?"

"Because she's afraid."

"Of what?"

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"One recording in particular."

Claire waited.

Evelyn continued.

"It was made by Thomas Bennett."

"Derek's father?"

"Yes."

"I thought he died before you married Derek."

"He did."

"Then how did you have his recording?"

"My sister found it in old Bennett family property records."

Claire's frustration grew.

"What did he say?"

Evelyn inhaled slowly.

"He said Margaret should never be allowed to control another child."

Claire went completely still.

Another child.

Not grandchild.

Child.

Claire whispered, "What happened in that family before Derek?"

May you like

Evelyn answered quietly.

"That's the question Margaret has spent fifteen years making sure no one asks."
