Chapter 12 - Project Claire)

Project Claire began before Claire became a Bennett.

Margaret had researched her.

Her family.

Her inheritance.

Her father's estate.

Her employment.

Her medical history where publicly accessible.

Her social connections.

Even her relationship with Jenna.

Claire read the emails in disbelief.

Margaret had described her as ideal.

Independent enough to appear respectable.

Limited immediate family.

Financially stable.

Strong health history.

No previous children.

Claire felt nauseated.

"I was selected."

Rachel's expression was grim.

"It appears Margaret considered you highly suitable."

"For Derek?"

"For the family."

Derek had not accidentally fallen in love with Claire at a charity dinner.

Margaret had attended that same event.

She had encouraged Derek to approach Claire.

Emails between Margaret and Peter Hall discussed future estate planning if Derek married someone with independent assets.

Later messages became more disturbing.

One described Claire's likely resistance to prenuptial restrictions.

Another suggested establishing financial dependency gradually.

Then, after the engagement, Margaret wrote:

Once pregnant, priorities usually become easier to manage.

Claire had to stop reading.

She walked to the window.

For years, she had treasured the story of how she met Derek.

He had joked about almost spilling wine on her.

He remembered the blue dress she wore.

He said he had noticed her across the room and could not look away.

It had been a plan.

Maybe Derek developed genuine feelings later.

Maybe not.

At that moment, it no longer mattered.

Love that required deception to exist was not safety.

Rachel continued reviewing.

One email contained a draft strategy.

If maternal resistance becomes significant after pregnancy:

Encourage withdrawal from employment.

Centralize finances.

Shift transportation responsibility.

Increase family involvement in appointments.

Document emotional episodes.

Establish voluntary medical authorization.

Escalate only if necessary.

Claire stared at the list.

Every step had happened.

Not randomly.

Not because Derek worried.

Not because Margaret became overexcited.

They had followed a plan.

Claire's hands began trembling.

Rachel took the pages away.

"Enough for today."

"No."

"Claire."

"I need to see all of it."

"You don't need to injure yourself with every sentence."

Claire looked at her.

"I spent months thinking I was losing my mind."

Rachel said nothing.

"I need to know I wasn't."

So they kept reading.

Another exchange between Margaret and Derek appeared six weeks after Claire became pregnant.

Margaret:

She is attached to Dr. Meyers.

Derek:

I'll handle it.

Margaret:

Do not push too early. She responds better when she thinks decisions are mutual.

Claire closed her eyes.

She remembered every conversation.

Every apology.

Every gentle explanation.

Every time Derek kissed her forehead after taking away another choice.

Then one email changed the direction of the criminal investigation.

Derek had written:

If she leaves, we use the Grayson route.

Margaret responded:

Only if we have an incident.

Derek:

We can create one.

Police obtained warrants.

Peter Hall cooperated almost immediately.

He claimed he had believed he was assisting with legitimate estate planning.

But he admitted Margaret frequently requested templates involving incapacity, guardianship, medical authority, and emergency custody.

He also confirmed that Derek asked how a spouse's credibility could affect family court decisions.

When confronted with the emails, Derek's attorney stopped calling the situation a misunderstanding.

Negotiations changed.

Prosecutors began examining potential charges involving stalking, unlawful surveillance, attempted coercion, fraud, and conspiracy related conduct.

Claire did not care about legal labels anymore.

She wanted distance.

She moved from Jenna's apartment into a small rental house near Dr. Meyers's hospital.

Two bedrooms.

A tiny kitchen.

A narrow backyard.

Nothing like the Bennett house.

Claire loved it immediately.

Jenna helped assemble the crib.

Evelyn brought curtains.

Daniel sent a rocking chair with a note.

For decisions that belong only to you.

Claire cried when she read it.

Her pregnancy entered the eighth month.

Her daughter remained healthy.

Dr. Meyers watched her closely.

For the first time in weeks, Claire began imagining life after the crisis.

Then Derek violated the protective order.

He appeared outside the rental house at dusk.

Claire saw him through the window.

He stood beside the sidewalk.

No flowers.

No gifts.

No smile.

Claire called police immediately.

Before they arrived, Derek spoke through the closed door.

"I'm not here to hurt you."

Claire did not answer.

"I know you found the emails."

Silence.

"My mother planned more than I understood."

Claire almost laughed.

He was doing it again.

Creating distance between himself and Margaret.

"It wasn't supposed to go this far."

Claire stepped toward the door but did not open it.

"Which part?"

Derek went quiet.

Claire repeated.

"Which part wasn't supposed to go this far?"

"The fighting."

"The spying?"

No answer.

"The tracker?"

Silence.

"The forged complaint?"

"Claire."

"The guardianship papers?"

"I wanted protection."

"For who?"

"Our daughter."

Claire's hand tightened around the phone.

"You didn't even know she was a girl."

Derek froze outside.

Claire continued.

"That's what bothered you, isn't it?"

"What?"

"That you couldn't control whether she was a boy."

"That's ridiculous."

"Your mother said maybe this one would finally be a boy."

Derek said nothing.

Claire suddenly understood something.

"She told you I was having a boy."

Silence.

"Derek?"

He exhaled.

"Mom thought the early scan suggested it."

Claire felt a strange sadness.

Their daughter had been turned into an expectation before she even had a name.

Derek said, "I don't care."

"You care about what your mother wants."

"That's not true."

"It has always been true."

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Derek looked toward the road.

Then said quickly, "There's a file in the house."

Claire's breath caught.

"What file?"

"Documents Mom prepared."

"The C.B. file?"

He stared through the glass panel.

"You know about it."

"What is inside?"

Derek hesitated.

Police lights appeared at the end of the street.

He stepped backward.

"Proof I didn't start this."

Claire looked at him.

"You participated."

"I can prove she planned everything."

"Then give it to the police."

His expression changed.

"I need protection too."

Claire almost felt pity.

Almost.

Then she remembered the strap.

The tracker.

The lies.

The threats.

"You had protection."

Derek frowned.

Claire said, "It was me. I spent two years protecting the version of you I wanted to believe existed."

Police vehicles stopped nearby.

Derek turned.

Before officers reached him, he looked back.

"The file is behind the downstairs bathroom vanity."

Claire's pulse accelerated.

"Mom doesn't know I moved it there."

Then police took him into custody for violating the order.

Claire called Rachel immediately.

A warrant request was filed.

But before authorities could search the house, Margaret disappeared.

And when police entered the next morning, the hidden bathroom compartment was empty.
