Chapter 5 - The Life Derek Invented)

For the next two days, Claire did something she had avoided throughout her marriage.
She investigated her husband.
Jenna helped.
Evelyn provided names.
Public records filled in the rest.
Derek's timeline contained gaps.
Jobs he described differently.
Addresses Claire had never heard about.
A civil case involving Bennett Family Holdings that had been settled confidentially.
A business registered under Margaret's name.
A second company dissolved after allegations of financial misconduct.
The deeper Claire looked, the less she recognized the life she had entered.
One discovery frightened her most.
Bennett Family Holdings had received the fifteen thousand dollars removed from Claire's joint account.
The company was controlled entirely by Margaret.
Claire immediately contacted a family attorney recommended by Jenna.
Her name was Rachel Monroe.
Rachel was practical, direct, and unimpressed by the Bennett family's social image.
"You have several problems," she said after reviewing Claire's documents.
"Several?"
"Possible financial abuse. Possible fraud. Possible unlawful surveillance. A questionable marriage status. And I'm very concerned about these medical authorization forms."
Claire handed her photographs of the paperwork Margaret had brought.
Rachel studied them.
"This document doesn't transfer full authority."
"So I'm safe?"
"No. It means they were starting small."
Claire felt sick.
Rachel tapped one paragraph.
"This creates a record suggesting you wanted Derek involved in decisions if you became medically impaired."
"But I never signed it."
"Good."
"What about the marriage?"
"We verify Evelyn's claim through court records."
"And if she's right?"
"Then Derek may have committed bigamy depending on what he knew and represented when he married you."
Claire leaned back.
She felt embarrassed even though she had done nothing wrong.
Rachel seemed to understand.
"Claire, shame is useful to people who want you silent."
Claire looked at her.
Rachel continued.
"Don't carry his."
That sentence stayed with Claire.
Meanwhile Derek sent messages.
At first apologetic.
Please come home.
I overreacted.
Mom overstepped.
We can fix this.
Then defensive.
You are letting Jenna poison you against your own family.
Then threatening.
If you keep disappearing, people are going to question whether you are making healthy decisions.
Claire showed that message to Rachel.
The attorney's expression sharpened.
"Save everything."
On the third evening, Derek appeared at Jenna's apartment.
Claire watched through the peephole.
He stood alone.
Flowers in one hand.
A paper bag in the other.
Jenna whispered, "Don't open it."
Derek knocked.
"Claire?"
She remained silent.
"I know you're inside."
Jenna took out her phone and began recording.
Derek's voice softened.
"I brought your prenatal vitamins."
Claire looked at the bottle sitting on Jenna's kitchen counter.
She had already brought them.
Derek continued.
"I know you're scared."
Claire almost laughed.
He sounded exactly like the old Derek.
Gentle.
Patient.
Safe.
That was what made him dangerous.
He could become the man she loved whenever he needed access.
"Please," he said. "Just talk to me."
Claire stepped closer to the door.
Jenna shook her head.
Claire spoke through it.
"Why did you lie about Evelyn?"
Silence.
Then Derek said, "She found you."
Not Who is Evelyn?
Not What are you talking about?
She found you.
Claire closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Derek's breathing changed.
"Claire, open the door."
"No."
"Evelyn is unstable."
Claire looked at Jenna.
There it was.
The same word.
"Was she your wife?"
A pause.
"Technically."
Claire's stomach twisted.
"You told me you'd never been married."
"It was complicated."
"Are you divorced?"
"Emotionally? For years."
Claire stared at the door.
"That's not what I asked."
Derek became impatient.
"The paperwork was supposed to be completed."
"Was it?"
"I don't know."
"You married me without knowing?"
"Claire, I loved you."
She almost opened the door just to slap him.
Instead she said, "Go away."
"Evelyn kidnapped my daughter."
Claire froze.
Jenna looked at her.
Derek continued.
"Did she mention that?"
Claire remembered Evelyn saying she had run.
"She took my child and disappeared," Derek said. "She spent years poisoning her against me."
Claire's certainty flickered.
That was all Derek needed.
"You don't know her," he continued.
"I know you lied."
"Because I was ashamed."
"Of what?"
"Of failing."
The old Derek again.
Vulnerable.
Measured.
Claire hated that some part of her still responded to it.
He said, "My marriage was toxic. Evelyn became obsessed with keeping me away from our daughter. My mother tried to help, and Evelyn decided we were controlling her."
Claire's breath caught.
The story was plausible.
Too plausible.
Jenna whispered, "Don't engage."
Derek continued.
"Ask yourself why Evelyn waited until you were pregnant to appear."
Claire had wondered exactly that.
"Ask yourself why she's filling your head with fear."
Claire pressed her palm against the door.
Derek lowered his voice.
"Come home. We will call lawyers together. We will sort out everything. No secrets."
Then Claire heard another voice in the hallway.
Margaret.
"Is she refusing again?"
Claire stepped back.
Derek hissed, "I told you to stay downstairs."
Jenna's expression changed.
Margaret had not come accidentally.
They were working together.
Claire said through the door, "You said you were alone."
Derek went silent.
Then Margaret spoke louder.
"Claire, this is getting ridiculous."
Claire's last doubt vanished.
She walked away from the door.
Derek began knocking harder.
"Claire."
She did not answer.
"Claire, open this door."
Jenna called building security.
By the time guards arrived, Derek and Margaret were gone.
The flowers remained outside.
So did the paper bag.
Inside the bag was not medication.
It contained an ultrasound photograph.
Claire's ultrasound photograph.
The original copy that had been kept in a drawer beside her bed.
On the back, someone had written:
You cannot keep a Bennett child from his family.
Claire stared at the handwriting.
It was Margaret's.
Rachel Monroe filed for an emergency protective order the following morning.
But before the judge could review it, Claire received a call from Dr. Meyers.
"Claire, someone contacted the hospital legal department."
"Who?"
"A private attorney claiming to represent Derek."
Claire's heart began racing.
"What do they want?"
"They're asking what would happen if a patient's mental condition created a risk to an unborn child."
Claire gripped the phone.
Dr. Meyers continued.
"I think you need to assume they are preparing something."
Claire looked at the photograph Margaret had sent.
Then at the legal forms on Rachel's desk.
Preparing something.
Claire finally understood.
May you like
The Bennetts were not waiting for her to return willingly.
They were building a case to force control over her.
