Chapter 9 - The Vote at Nine

The emergency trustee meeting took place in the Whitmore Tower boardroom.
Twelve trustees sat around the black stone table. David occupied the chair beside Teresa. Vanessa sat behind them with the blue case at her feet.
Harold’s chair remained empty.
At precisely nine, Eleanor entered with Adrienne and Noah.
Conversation stopped.
David stood.
“You left the hospital without medical clearance.”
“Dr. Sloane lost his authority to hold me.”
Teresa’s face tightened.
Simon Kessler, director of the family office, addressed Eleanor carefully.
“This meeting concerns temporary protective measures.”
“It concerns theft.”
David shook his head as though saddened.
“This is the paranoia Dr. Sloane documented.”
Adrienne distributed copies of the laboratory report.
“The hospital found a controlled sedative in Ms. Whitmore’s water. Dr. Sloane entered the diagnosis before conducting an examination. His professional license is under emergency review.”
One trustee began reading.
Another turned toward Teresa.
David remained calm.
“A contaminated glass does not prove anyone here drugged Eleanor.”
“No,” Eleanor said. “The dining-room recording does.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Eleanor played footage captured by the hidden penthouse system. The screen showed Teresa leaning toward Eleanor after she collapsed.
“You should have gone to Paris quietly.”
Teresa stared at the image.
“That recording was manipulated.”
“It came from a surveillance system installed before David and I married.”
Simon Kessler leaned forward.
“Who authorized that system?”
“My father.”
David looked toward the trustees.
“This is another delusion. Edmund Whitmore has been dead for eleven years.”
“Then someone should explain why his biometric credential activated the Archive Custodian account three days ago.”
The room erupted.
Simon opened his laptop.
His face lost color.
“The account exists,” he said.
“Who accessed it?” a trustee asked.
“The authorization is sealed.”
“Unseal it,” Eleanor said.
“I cannot.”
“You can under an active fraud investigation.”
“We do not have one.”
The boardroom doors opened.
Two investigators from the New York State Department of Financial Services entered with a federal prosecutor.
Adrienne placed a warrant on the table.
“You do now.”
Vanessa reached for the blue case.
Noah stepped between her and the door.
David did not move.
“You planned this,” he said to Eleanor.
“You gave me seventeen days.”
The investigators opened the case.
Inside were three encrypted drives, six passports, institutional access tokens, and transfer instructions for Geneva.
The largest transaction would have moved forty-one percent of Whitmore Holdings into a private foundation controlled by David.
Teresa’s residential portfolio was listed separately.
Vanessa had been assigned twelve million dollars and a property in Portugal.
Harold’s name did not appear.
One investigator removed a sealed envelope.
It was addressed to Lydia Voss.
Eleanor looked at Adrienne.
David saw the exchange.
“This is bigger than you think,” he said.
The federal prosecutor advised him to remain silent.
David laughed.
“You believe the passports are evidence against me? They were placed in that case by Vanessa.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You told me the accounts were legal.”
“I told you what you wanted to hear.”
“You said we were leaving together.”
David looked at Eleanor.
“I never intended to travel with her.”
Vanessa rose.
“You used me.”
David’s voice remained flat.
“You used Eleanor. Do not pretend there is a moral distinction.”
The accusation broke whatever loyalty Vanessa still possessed.
She turned toward the prosecutor.
“I have messages. Meetings. Instructions from Teresa.”
Teresa stood so quickly her chair struck the wall.
“She is lying.”
Vanessa opened her phone.
Teresa crossed the room and slapped it from her hand.
Security entered.
The trustees watched as Teresa was separated from Vanessa.
Eleanor felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
Then Simon Kessler spoke.
“There is a problem.”
He turned his laptop toward Eleanor.
The incapacity transfer had not been stopped.
Despite the frozen cards, the trust system showed that temporary voting control had already moved away from her.
“Who controls it?” Eleanor asked.
Simon enlarged the authorization line.
The new controller was not David.
It was an entity called E.W. Continuity Holdings.

The transfer had occurred eleven years earlier.
