Chapter 11 - The Man in the Service Elevator

The boardroom emptied into the private corridor.
Security directed the trustees toward the west stairwell, but Eleanor remained beside the service elevator.
The emergency system reported smoke on the lower floors. Noah checked the building network and found no heat readings, no sprinkler activation, and no fire-department alert.
“It is a false alarm,” he said.
“A distraction,” Adrienne replied.
“For what?”
The service elevator opened.
Dr. Malcolm Sloane stood inside.
He held no weapon. He carried only a brown envelope and the expression of a man who had run out of places to hide.
Security moved toward him.
Sloane raised both hands.
“I came to surrender.”
“Why here?” the prosecutor asked.
“Because I will not survive long enough to reach your office.”
Eleanor remained several feet away.
“Who hired you?”
“I never met them.”
“You signed a false report.”
“I received records, symptoms, and instructions.”
“From Teresa?”
“Initially.”
Teresa stared at him.
Sloane continued.
“Later instructions came through a medical foundation. The foundation knew details about my past. They threatened my family.”
“You drugged me.”
“I authorized a sedative. Vanessa placed it in the water.”
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Sloane held out the envelope.
“This arrived after the cards were frozen.”
The prosecutor took it.
Inside was a photograph of Sloane’s wife entering a grocery store that morning. A red circle had been drawn around her head.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
THE DOCTOR HAS COMPLETED HIS PURPOSE.
Sloane’s hands shook.
“I thought David would obtain the company. I thought Teresa would receive the properties. That was the plan we were given.”
“Who changed it?” Eleanor asked.
“No one changed it. We misunderstood it.”
He looked toward David.
“The incapacity scheme was designed to fail publicly.”
David’s face hardened. “You are protecting yourself.”
“The case contains too much evidence. The doctor’s report was dated early. The transfers were obvious. The surveillance system recorded everything. We were meant to be caught.”
“Why?” Noah asked.
“To place Eleanor in a position where she would freeze all six cards.”
The seventh account.
Continuity Holdings.
The hidden controlling option.
Eleanor understood.
“Someone needed me to activate my father’s system.”
Sloane nodded.
“What happens now?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect us to believe that?”
“I know only one phrase. They repeated it in every instruction.”
Sloane looked toward the ceiling camera.
“When the daughter locks the six doors, the father may enter through the seventh.”
The service elevator doors began to close.
Security blocked them.
The car was empty behind Sloane, but Noah noticed a maintenance panel hanging open near the floor.
A small transmitter had been attached inside.
Someone had tracked Sloane into the building.
Noah removed it and placed it inside a signal-blocking pouch.
The false fire alarm stopped immediately.
The connection was not proof, but it was enough.
The alarm had been triggered to isolate the boardroom, flush Sloane into the open, and monitor Eleanor’s reaction.
Lydia was correct.
The meeting had been compromised.
That evening, David, Vanessa, Teresa, and Sloane were taken to separate federal interview rooms. None had yet been formally charged with the larger conspiracy, but the evidence supported fraud, attempted financial theft, falsification of medical records, unlawful surveillance, and conspiracy.
Harold entered protective custody.
Eleanor returned to the penthouse with Adrienne and Noah.
The bedroom appeared exactly as it had before the confrontation. Gray bedding. Chandelier light. Manhattan beyond the windows.
Above the mirror, the hidden camera continued blinking.
Noah opened the molding.
Behind the camera was a narrow compartment containing a black key.
A number had been engraved along its edge.
711.
“Apartment 7C?” Adrienne asked.
“No,” Eleanor said. “Eleven years. Seven cards. One custodian.”
She turned the key over.
The other side bore the logo of Grand Meridian Bank, a private institution that had closed after Edmund disappeared.
Adrienne stared at it.
“The original vault is still beneath its old headquarters.”
“What is there now?”
“A hotel.”
May you like
Eleanor closed her hand around the key.
“Then we are checking in.”
