ALL SIX CARDS ARE FROZEN / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Night Eleanor Forgot Her Name

Eleanor awakened in a private hospital suite with leather restraints around her wrists.

David sat beside the window.

Teresa stood near the door speaking to Dr. Sloane. Vanessa was absent. Harold was nowhere in sight.

Eleanor opened her eyes only slightly.

“She became aggressive,” Teresa said.

“She overturned the table,” Sloane replied. “The staff will document it.”

“She asked what we gave her.”

“That supports paranoia.”

David approached the bed.

“Will she be awake for the board meeting?”

“She does not need to be.”

“I want her present.”

“Why?”

“So the trustees can see her.”

Eleanor kept her breathing slow.

Sloane checked the monitor above the bed.

“The medication should wear off by morning. She may have fragmented memory.”

“What if she remembers dinner?” Teresa asked.

“She will remember her interpretation of dinner. That is different from proof.”

The door opened.

A nurse entered carrying a medication tray.

Sloane followed Teresa into the hallway. David remained beside the bed.

The nurse checked Eleanor’s wristband.

Then she leaned close.

“Do not swallow,” she whispered.

Eleanor recognized Noah’s voice through the surgical mask.

He placed a pill beneath her tongue, lifted a cup to her mouth, and pretended to watch her swallow. When he turned away, Eleanor removed the pill and hid it beneath the blanket.

“Harold delivered the water glass,” Noah said quietly. “Adrienne has the laboratory results. A sedative was added.”

“Where is Harold?”

“Missing.”

“Vanessa?”

“Returning to the penthouse for the blue case.”

Noah adjusted the monitor.

“The vote was moved forward. Nine tomorrow morning.”

Eleanor’s heart tightened.

“They know we are close.”

“Adrienne filed an objection.”

“Will it stop the vote?”

“No.”

David returned.

Noah stepped away from the bed and left without looking at him.

David sat beside Eleanor.

“I know you’re awake.”

She opened her eyes.

He looked tired rather than guilty.

“What happened to us?” Eleanor asked.

The question caught him unprepared.

“You stopped seeing me,” he said.

“I trusted you.”

“You managed me. There is a difference.”

“I gave you a position, a home, and access to my family.”

“You gave me whatever kept me dependent.”

“So you decided to steal everything.”

“I decided to stop asking permission.”

Eleanor studied the man she had once believed loved her.

“Did Vanessa make you feel powerful?”

His expression became cold.

“This is not about Vanessa.”

“It never is, for men like you.”

“You think I am one of your employees.”

“No. My employees are competent.”

David stood.

“Tomorrow the trustees will hear that.”

He walked toward the door.

Eleanor spoke before he reached it.

“Did Teresa tell you about the seventh card?”

He stopped.

Only for a second.

Then he left without turning around.

Eleanor had her answer.

David did not know it existed.

At 3:30 in the morning, Adrienne entered with a court order releasing Eleanor from the restraints. The hospital’s independent administrator had received the laboratory report and suspended Sloane’s privileges pending investigation.

Sloane had already disappeared.

Security footage showed him leaving through a service entrance in a maintenance uniform.

Eleanor changed into the emerald-green gown Adrienne had brought from the penthouse.

“A gown?” Noah asked when he joined them.

“The trustees expect to see a frightened patient,” Eleanor said. “I prefer to disappoint them.”

Adrienne handed her the black card.

“All six accounts are ready.”

“And the seventh?”

“We will not know who controls it until activation.”

Eleanor looked through the hospital window at the pale beginning of morning.

“Freeze them.”

Adrienne entered the command.

The screen requested Eleanor’s biometric confirmation.

She pressed her thumb against the sensor.

One by one, the six accounts turned red.

DAVID HALE: FROZEN.

TERESA WHITMORE: FROZEN.

HAROLD BELL: FROZEN.

VANESSA CROSS: FROZEN.

EMERGENCY HOUSEHOLD: FROZEN.

ELEANOR WHITMORE: FROZEN.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then a seventh line appeared.

ARCHIVE CUSTODIAN: ACTIVE.

The custodian’s identity decrypted.

Eleanor read the name twice.

It was not Lydia Voss.

It was not Adrienne.

It was not Harold.

The seventh card belonged to Edmund Whitmore.

Its activity log showed a successful biometric authorization made seventy-two hours earlier.

Eleanor’s father had been legally dead for eleven years.

Someone using his fingerprint had activated the account three days ago.
