A FAMILY REVENGE DRAMA / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - What Chloe Chose)

Nathaniel was charged before sunrise with unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, conspiracy, fraud, and assault. His attorneys secured a hospital transfer for the cut on his wrist and immediately began negotiating. Lydia disappeared from her townhouse. Damian Rourke’s helicopter landed at a private airfield, but the passenger manifest named only the pilot.

The city woke to images of Clara leaving Vance Tower with the burned sapphire around her neck.

This time, she did not hide her face.

Chloe spent nine hours with prosecutors. She surrendered passwords, accounts, messages, and the original mountain-lodge recording. In return, they promised only that her cooperation would be reported to the court.

When she finished, she asked to see Clara.

They met in a plain interview room. Chloe wore borrowed clothes and had a bandage above one eyebrow. Without the stage lights of corporate life, she looked exhausted and very young.

“Nathaniel has asked for a deal,” Chloe said. “He will testify against Rourke and Lydia if you support immunity on the Halcyon charges.”

“I do not control prosecutors.”

“You control public pressure.”

“And you want me to use it for him?”

Chloe looked at her hands. “I want him to tell them where Rourke went.”

“So do I.”

“Then why not agree?”

“Because every person in this scheme believed accountability was something to trade after being caught.”

Chloe flinched.

Clara softened her voice but not the meaning. “You helped him steal my signature. You let him burn my dress and stood in the doorway. You became a witness only after Rourke threatened your future. Cooperation matters. It does not rewrite what came before.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Tears gathered in Chloe’s eyes. “My father was a maintenance supervisor at Vance Tower. He died when I was twelve. Rourke paid for school and told me loyalty was the only inheritance poor children received. Every promotion felt like proof that I had earned my way out. Then Nathaniel looked at me as though I was the room he had been trying to enter.”

Clara understood without forgiving. “Rourke chose people with an old wound and taught them to feed it.”

“He chose you too.”

“Yes.”

Chloe slid a sealed envelope across the table. “Nathaniel dropped this on the locked floor. It was inside his jacket.”

The envelope contained a photograph of Lydia beside Damian Rourke and a third figure at the mountain lodge. The image had been taken from a distance. Snow blurred the person’s face, but one detail was clear: a silver walking stick topped with a carved falcon.

On the back, Nathaniel had written V.M. and an address.

“He knew who the Patron was?” Clara asked.

“He found the photograph in Lydia’s safe after the gala. He would not tell me the name.”

The address belonged to a private cemetery outside the city.

Clara and Elias went there under federal protection. The road curved through fields bright with late-summer sun, peaceful enough to make the mountain recording feel impossible.

The address led to a stone mausoleum engraved with the name Morrow.

Inside were memorial plaques for Victor Morrow, founder of the Morrow banking dynasty, and his wife, Evelyn. Victor had died twenty-two years earlier. His portrait showed a silver walking stick topped by a falcon.

“V.M. was dead before the lodge meeting,” Elias said.

Clara examined the plaque. The dates were carved deeply, but the brass screws were new. Aaron removed it with the caretaker’s permission. Behind it was an empty compartment and a recent fingerprint.

The print belonged to Damian Rourke.

Elias studied the portrait. “Maybe Rourke used a dead man’s identity for the network.”

Clara looked at the falcon. “Or someone inherited more than a bank.”

Her phone rang from the detention hospital.

Nathaniel requested one call with his wife.

Clara accepted.

“Support the deal,” he said without greeting. “I will identify the Patron.”

“Tell prosecutors.”

“I tell them, I lose the only thing keeping me alive.”

“Chloe found the photograph.”

Silence.

“Rourke used you,” Clara continued. “Your mother used you. Now you want to use me. There is nothing left to negotiate.”

“You still don’t understand. V.M. is not a person. It is a title.”

“What does it mean?”

A door opened on his end. Nathaniel’s breathing quickened.

“They found me.”

The line filled with a struggle and a nurse shouting. Then a voice spoke close to the phone, electronically distorted.

“The Vance Mirror belongs to us.”

The call ended.

Nathaniel survived the attack. The assailant, disguised as an orderly, escaped through a laundry corridor. For the first time since his arrest, Nathaniel gave prosecutors a full statement without asking for a promise.

He named Rourke, Lydia, Loman, and seven financial intermediaries.

When they asked him to identify the Patron, he wrote two words: Vigilant Mother.
