A FAMILY REVENGE DRAMA / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Gala of Masks)

The emergency shareholder gala was held at the mansion twenty-four hours later. Officially, it was a continuation of the Founders celebration. In reality, it was a battlefield arranged with white orchids, crystal glasses, and three hundred witnesses.

Nathaniel arrived through the main doors at eight. He wore the same black tuxedo he had worn when he burned Clara’s gown. Cameras followed him as he embraced Lydia and shook hands with directors. Chloe was nowhere visible.

Clara watched from an upstairs room while Miriam adjusted the transmitter in her earring. She wore a simple navy suit. The color was deliberate.

“Federal agents are positioned outside,” Elias said. “They need a direct exchange or an admissible threat. Aaron’s team has searched the public rooms.”

“And the service tunnels?”

“Nathaniel knows this house better than security expected. We found two exits, not Chloe.”

Clara held the recorder from the theater. Forensic experts had authenticated the mountain-lodge voices of Adrian, Eleanor, Rourke, and Lydia. The Patron remained unidentified. The evidence was devastating, but releasing it without Chloe could alert the wider network and endanger Simon if he was still alive.

“Rourke?” she asked.

“Onstage. Pretending to mediate.”

At eight thirty, Rourke called the shareholders to order. He spoke of stability, tradition, and the duty to separate private conflict from corporate governance. Nathaniel stood to his right. Lydia sat in the front row, composed as stone.

Clara entered from the rear.

The crowd turned. A path opened before her, the same way it had opened for Nathaniel after he left her in the rain. This time she walked it upright.

Rourke invited her to the stage. “Ms. Vance has requested an opportunity to clarify recent misunderstandings.”

Nathaniel offered his hand as she climbed the steps. She ignored it.

At the lectern, Clara looked through the open doors toward the patio. The black mark from the fire remained faintly visible on the stone.

“Two nights ago,” she began, “my husband burned the dress I intended to wear here. He told me I embarrassed him. He believed keeping me outside would keep a secret inside.”

Nathaniel’s smile remained fixed.

“The secret is that I am Clara Eleanor Vance, controlling owner of Vance Global. But ownership is not the most important truth this company has hidden.”

Rourke moved toward her. “This is not the agreed statement.”

“No,” Clara said. “The agreed statement is in Nathaniel’s pocket.”

Every camera shifted to him.

Nathaniel removed a folded paper. “My wife is under extraordinary emotional strain. She agreed privately to confirm my temporary voting authority for the protection of employees.”

“Read the last paragraph,” Clara said.

He did. The language withdrew the audit, validated the spousal consent, and authorized the completion of Project Aster.

“And in exchange?” Clara asked.

“There is no exchange.”

“Where is Chloe Mercer?”

Whispers spread across the room.

Nathaniel looked hurt. “Chloe resigned after admitting she falsified documents under your direction.”

Screens behind the stage came alive. Edited medical records appeared beside photographs of Clara outside therapy offices. Nathaniel spoke gently about trauma, secrecy, and delusion. He played a recording of Clara saying she had tested his character throughout their marriage. He presented her hidden identity as evidence of obsession.

For five minutes he dismantled her credibility with the intimacy of a man who knew where every scar lay.

When he finished, several shareholders applauded.

Clara waited until the sound faded. “You forgot something, Nathaniel.”

“What?”

“The kitchen staff.”

June stepped into the control booth. The screens changed.

Video showed Nathaniel pouring lighter fluid over the navy gown. Another angle, recovered from a catering vehicle camera, captured him shoving Clara to the ground. Audio from the patio carried his command that Chloe would replace her.

The room went silent.

Then the mirror-server footage played: Nathaniel in the sewing room, Nathaniel taking signature samples, Nathaniel discussing guardianship with Rourke, Nathaniel kissing Chloe after receiving stolen documents.

His face emptied.

Clara turned to the board. “The medical files are forgeries. The original clinician is present with certified records.”

An elderly doctor stood near Elias.

“The spousal consent is a forgery. The notary’s digital journal was recovered this morning. He recorded being threatened by Deputy Chief Loman.”

Aaron escorted Loman into the ballroom beside two federal agents.

Rourke backed away from the stage. “This material is illegally obtained and cannot be authenticated here.”

“The shareholders are not a courtroom,” Clara said. “They are deciding whether to trust you.”

Miriam called the motion: immediate suspension of Rourke, Nathaniel, Chloe, and every director named in the Aster audit. The trust controlled fifty-one percent, but Clara asked the minority shareholders to vote first.

Red lights appeared across the tally screen, each one a vote for suspension. Then more. Then a flood.

Rourke lost by eighty-seven percent.

Nathaniel lost by ninety-two.

For the first time since Clara met him, he stood in a room where ambition could not save him.

Federal agents approached. Nathaniel reached into his jacket. Guards moved instantly, but he removed only a small black drive.

“You want Chloe?” he called to Clara. “You want the original voice?”

He crushed the drive beneath his shoe.

The ballroom lights went out.

Guests screamed. Emergency lamps flashed red. By the time power returned, Nathaniel was gone.

On the stage where his career had ended, Clara found the folded statement he wanted her to sign. Across the back, in Chloe’s handwriting, was a message.

He took me to the locked floor. Do not let him open Halcyon.
