Chapter 8 - Who Owned the House

Martin entered carrying the sealed envelope.
Two police officers followed him.
Robert demanded they leave his property.
Martin removed his coat calmly.
“That is precisely what we are here to discuss.”
He placed the evidence folder on the table and explained the investigation.
The nine-million-dollar authorization had been forged.
The ownership application had been falsified.
The loan documents contained stolen information.
Victor Dane had been arrested that morning while attempting to leave the state. His laptop contained messages from Chloe, Robert, and Emma’s mother.
Chloe tried to run toward the hallway.
An officer stepped into her path.
“You are not under arrest at this moment,” he said, “but you are required to remain available for questioning.”
“At this moment?” Chloe whispered.
Martin opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was the original trust deed.
He explained that Emma had purchased the property during the foreclosure crisis. Her parents had been granted the right to live there under specific conditions.
One condition prohibited using the property as loan security.
Another prohibited fraudulent attempts to alter ownership.
Violating either condition terminated their right to occupy the home.
Robert gripped the table.
“This house is ours. Emma gave it to us.”
“No,” Martin said. “Emma allowed you to live here.”
He turned to Emma.
“The trust now permits the owner to take immediate possession.”
Every person in the room looked at her.
For years, Emma had feared this exact moment.
She had imagined her mother crying, her father shouting, Chloe calling her heartless.
Now that it had arrived, she felt strangely calm.
Robert approached her.
“You would throw your parents into the street on Christmas?”
Emma met his eyes.
“You tried to steal nine million dollars from me.”
“We made a mistake.”
“A mistake is forgetting a birthday. You forged my name.”
Her mother reached for her.
Emma stepped back.
“You called me home because you thought you could humiliate me in front of witnesses. You wanted the whole family to pressure me until I surrendered.”
May you like
Her voice remained quiet.
“That is not love.”
