Chapter 7 - The Call
Before Emma could press the button, Chloe moved around the table and grabbed her arm.
“Don’t make this dramatic.”
Evelyn stepped forward and pulled Chloe’s hand away.
“Do not touch her.”
Chloe shoved Evelyn’s shoulder.
Emma caught the older woman before she lost her balance.
The room erupted with voices.
Robert ordered Evelyn to leave.
Emma’s mother accused her of causing trouble.
Relatives moved backward, suddenly less eager to participate.
Emma helped Evelyn stand upright.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.”
Evelyn looked at Chloe with disgust.
“But she is going to regret that.”
Emma lifted her phone.
The button on the screen was connected to a fraud response conference established by the bank, Martin, and the investigators.
She pressed it.
At once, the three primary accounts linked to the forgery were restricted.
Robert received the first alert.
Chloe received the second.
Emma’s mother received the third.
Their panic spread through the room like smoke.
“Our accounts are restricted,” Robert said.
Chloe opened her banking application again and again.
“This must be a technical problem.”
“It isn’t,” Emma replied.
She displayed the message confirming that the fraud investigation had advanced.
“The bank found the false transfer request, the forged property records, and the applications submitted using stolen financial information.”
Robert turned toward Chloe.
“You said the documents were legal.”
Chloe stared back at him.
“You signed them too.”
The room went silent.
Emma’s mother sank into a chair.
Robert’s voice became weak.
“You told us Emma would eventually approve everything.”
“You wanted the house,” Chloe snapped. “Don’t pretend you were protecting her.”
Their alliance collapsed in less than a minute.
Each tried to blame the other.
Each revealed another part of the plan.
They forgot the relatives were listening.
