Chapter 3 - A Signature That Wasn’t Hers

For three weeks, nobody in the family contacted Emma.
The silence was painful, but it also brought relief.
She slept without midnight calls. She worked without demands. She spent Sundays with Evelyn, who had retired from housekeeping but still visited Emma regularly.
Evelyn had known Emma since childhood.
Unlike her parents, she remembered the nights Emma studied at the kitchen table after working two jobs. She remembered Emma hiding grocery money in a flour container so Robert would not spend it. She remembered Chloe receiving birthday parties while Emma received promises.
“They are punishing you because you finally said no,” Evelyn said.
Emma poured tea into two cups.
“Maybe I should have handled it differently.”
“You handled it with facts. They handled it with cruelty.”
A week later, Emma received a call from First National Bank.
The representative asked whether she had approved a temporary transfer authorization for nine million dollars.
Emma thought it was a mistake.
Then the bank emailed the document.
Her name appeared at the bottom.
The signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
Emma immediately called Martin.
Within an hour, the account was frozen and an internal fraud investigation had begun.
The authorization had been submitted with copies of Emma’s identification, private financial records, and an access code that only her family could have known.
Someone had entered her childhood home office.
Years earlier, Emma had stored old company papers there while moving buildings. The locked cabinet contained expired identification copies and examples of her signature.
Only three people had keys to the room.
Robert.
Her mother.
And Chloe.
Martin encouraged Emma to report the forgery to the police immediately.
Emma hesitated.
“If I do that, one of them could be arrested.”
“One of them tried to steal nine million dollars.”
“They may have been manipulated.”
“Emma, this is the excuse you always use. Someone hurts you, and you immediately invent a reason they should not face consequences.”
She looked again at the forged document.
The bank’s security team had already discovered something else. The request had been submitted through Chloe’s agency account.
Emma finally nodded.

“Report it.”
But the forgery was only the beginning.
