Chapter 8 - FIRST FLAME

The underground passage smelled of damp stone and new concrete.
Rebecca led the group through the darkness while an officer carried the doctor’s medical bag. Mara stayed close to Claire, supporting her whenever another contraction tightened across her abdomen.
The doctor insisted the pains did not yet mean labor.
Claire tried to believe him.
Behind them, distant impacts shook dust from the tunnel ceiling.
Daniel and Grant had remained inside Mercer House while two armed forces closed around them.
Claire wanted to turn back.
Every instinct told her to find her father.
But the hand beneath her heart moved again, reminding her that she was responsible for more than instinct.
The passage ended beneath the carriage house.
Rebecca checked the exterior camera through her tablet.
“Clear for now.”
They entered a dusty room filled with covered furniture and old riding equipment.
An armored medical vehicle waited outside, hidden behind the building. One of Daniel’s trusted officers had positioned it earlier.
Claire climbed inside.
Mara sat opposite her.
Rebecca inserted Claire’s wedding ring into the tablet scanner and searched Grant’s account.
The file named FIRST FLAME required two forms of identification.
Claire’s fingerprint.
And Mara’s.
Mara stared at the screen.
“He knew about me.”
Rebecca looked at her.
“Place your finger on the scanner.”
“What if it opens something Adrian wants?”
Claire answered, “Then we find out before he does.”
Mara touched the screen.
The file opened.
A video appeared.
Grant sat alone in a hotel room, speaking directly into the camera. The date showed he had recorded it seven months before Claire’s pregnancy.
“If Claire is watching this,” he began, “then I have either disappeared or finally failed to keep the truth contained.”
Claire felt no comfort hearing his voice.
“I met Claire because Lydia Crane arranged it. I did not know that when we first spoke. She placed me at the charity event where Claire was working and sent me a file describing her interests, her schedule, and the people she trusted.”
Claire remembered that night.
Grant had seemed nervous and charming. He had spilled water on his own jacket, then made her laugh while trying to clean it.
She had believed the meeting was accidental.
The recording continued.
“Lydia expected me to gain access to Daniel Mercer. I was supposed to date Claire for several months, collect information, and leave. I told myself I was only playing a role.”
Grant looked away from the camera.
“Then I loved her.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Mara watched quietly.
“I tried to end my contact with Lydia after our engagement. She showed me proof that I had already committed crimes on behalf of Icarus. She said Claire would learn everything unless I continued.”
Grant described security codes, hidden cameras, and false financial records.
Then he spoke of the pregnancy.
“The day Claire told me we were having a child, Lydia ordered me to obtain a blood sample. I refused. Two days later, someone entered our apartment while Claire slept. Nothing was stolen. A needle mark appeared on Claire’s arm the next morning.”
Claire remembered the mark.
Grant had told her it was probably an insect bite.
“I understood then that I could not protect Claire by refusing. I had to make Icarus believe I was still useful while building enough evidence to destroy them.”
The video shifted to a scanned document.
It showed a genetic comparison.
Claire leaned closer.
SUBJECT A: CLAIRE MERCER.
SUBJECT B: ADRIAN VALE.
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.04 PERCENT.
Mara released a breath.
Claire stared at the number.
Vale was not her father.
The next page displayed another comparison.
SUBJECT A: CLAIRE MERCER.
SUBJECT C: DANIEL MERCER.
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.98 PERCENT.
Claire pressed a hand against her mouth.
Daniel was her biological father.
The relief arrived with unexpected grief.
Her identity had not changed, but someone had spent years trying to steal it.
Grant’s image returned.
“Vale does not know the true result. Lydia ordered the laboratory to create two versions. The false version identifies Vale as Claire’s father. The real version confirms Daniel.”
Mara looked down at the blanket in her hands.
Claire noticed.
“What about you?”
Mara said nothing.
Rebecca searched the remaining records.
A third genetic report appeared.
SUBJECT A: MARA VALE.
SUBJECT B: ADRIAN VALE.
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.02 PERCENT.
Mara stopped breathing.
Claire reached across the vehicle and took her hand.
Mara did not pull away.
The final comparison appeared.
SUBJECT A: MARA VALE.
SUBJECT D: LYDIA CRANE.
PROBABILITY OF MATERNITY: 99.91 PERCENT.
Mara stared at the screen.
“My mother died when I was a baby.”
“Lydia lied,” Claire said.
The video continued.
“Vale raised Mara because Lydia convinced him the girl carried Evelyn Mercer’s genetic line. She does not. Mara was created as a substitute, an emergency key in case Claire could not be controlled.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
Rebecca paused the recording.
“We can verify this independently.”
“He told me I was chosen.”
Mara’s voice broke.
“He said he rescued me.”
Claire tightened her grip on her hand.
“He used you. That does not define who you are.”
The vehicle reached the remains of Fort Halston before dawn.
Above ground, little remained except broken foundations and rusted fencing. Rebecca entered the elevator code from Mara’s card into a concealed panel beneath a concrete slab.
The ground opened.
A metal platform waited below.
They descended nearly one hundred feet.
At the bottom, white lights illuminated a corridor that looked newly maintained.
No guards appeared.
No alarms sounded.
“Vale knows we are here,” Mara whispered.
They followed signs toward the communications center.
At the end of the corridor, they found Evelyn sitting behind a glass wall.
She was alive.
Her wrists were secured to a chair, but when she saw Claire, she stood as far as the restraints allowed.
“Claire!”
Claire moved toward the glass.
“Mom.”
Evelyn looked at her stomach.
“Are you hurt?”
“We’re safe.”
A speaker activated.
Adrian Vale’s voice filled the chamber.
“An emotional reunion. Daniel always valued those.”
Rebecca raised her weapon and scanned the observation windows.
“Show yourself.”
Vale laughed.
“In time.”
The glass wall separating Evelyn from Claire began to lower into the floor.
Mara stepped back.
“It was never that easy.”
Evelyn ran toward Claire as soon as the opening was wide enough.
They embraced carefully.
For one precious moment, nothing else mattered.
Then the steel doors behind them slammed shut.
Gas hissed from vents in the ceiling.
The doctor checked the air sensor on his medical bag.
“Not toxic,” he said. “Some kind of sedative.”
Rebecca covered her mouth with her sleeve.
Vale spoke again.
“Claire Mercer, place your hand on the central console and the ventilation will stop.”
A black screen illuminated in the center of the room.
Claire approached it.
Evelyn caught her arm.
“No.”
“We have no choice.”
“You always have a choice.”
Claire looked at Mara, Rebecca, her mother, and the doctor.
One by one, they were becoming unsteady.
Claire placed her palm on the console.
A needle beneath the glass pricked her finger.
The ventilation stopped.
Lights raced across the screen.
GENETIC AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED.
A map appeared.
Dozens of locations glowed across the world.
Vale’s voice changed.
Wonder replaced amusement.
“At last.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“I opened your archive. Release us.”
“You opened the first door.”
A second scanner emerged.
This one displayed two handprints.
One was labeled MERCER.
The other was labeled FIRST FLAME.
Mara stepped beside Claire.
“It wants both of us.”
Claire remembered the file name.
Vale spoke gently.
“Place your hands together, daughters.”
Mara looked at Claire.
Then she smiled faintly.
“He still thinks the tests prove we belong to him.”
Claire understood.
Vale did not know they had discovered the truth.
She placed her hand on the Mercer scanner.
Mara placed hers on First Flame.
The console began reading their blood.
Then the entire system turned red.
ACCESS DENIED.
UNAUTHORIZED GENETIC PROFILE.
Vale’s silence lasted only two seconds.
But it was enough.
Mara leaned toward the speaker.
“You should have checked who your real daughter was.”
May you like
Alarms erupted throughout Fort Halston.
And somewhere behind the walls, Adrian Vale began to scream orders.
