Chapter 1 - THE RESCUE AT MERCER HOUSE

The first thing Claire remembered was the sound of rain against glass.

Not gentle rain.

A hard, relentless storm that shook the tall windows of Mercer House and turned the gardens beyond them into blurred shapes beneath the night sky.

She opened her eyes on the floor of the blue drawing room.

For several seconds, she did not move.

She listened.

A grandfather clock ticked somewhere beyond the closed doors. Wind pressed against the windows. Farther away, footsteps crossed the marble hallway.

Claire placed one hand over her stomach.

Her baby moved beneath her palm.

The small motion gave her enough strength to breathe again.

She tried to remember how she had reached the room.

Grant had asked her to come to the estate that afternoon. He had sounded unusually calm on the phone, promising that he finally wanted to explain the missing money, the false signatures, and the messages that had appeared on her private medical account.

She had known she should not trust him.

But Grant was still her husband.

More importantly, he claimed to possess evidence proving that someone had been following her since the beginning of her pregnancy.

Claire had agreed to meet him only because her mother was supposed to be waiting downstairs.

When Claire arrived, her mother was nowhere in sight.

Grant had taken her phone, locked the drawing room doors, and told her that leaving would put everyone in danger.

Then he showed her the photograph.

It had been taken through the window of her hospital room.

Claire stood beside an examination table while a nurse adjusted a monitor. Her face was turned away from the camera.

The person who took the photograph had been close enough to see the details on her medical bracelet.

“You knew about this?” Claire had asked.

Grant’s answer changed everything.

“I knew someone was watching you. I didn’t know why until last week.”

Before he could explain further, the lights had gone out.

Someone entered the room.

There had been a struggle in the darkness, a hand over Claire’s mouth, and Grant shouting at someone she could not see.

When she regained consciousness, Grant was standing over her.

The room was locked.

His shirt was torn.

And blood from a small cut marked the side of his face.

“Stay down,” he had whispered. “They’re still in the house.”

Claire had not believed him.

Not after the lies.

Not after the money he had moved from their joint accounts.

Not after learning that the security company supposedly protecting her had been registered under Grant’s name.

So when she heard vehicles outside, she screamed.

The front doors of Mercer House burst open less than a minute later.

Colonel Daniel Mercer entered with military police and tactical officers behind him.

Claire had never seen her father move so quickly.

Grant stepped between them.

“Don’t take her into the hallway,” he warned. “That’s what they want.”

Daniel struck him with one controlled movement, forcing him away without continuing the confrontation.

Officers restrained Grant.

Daniel crossed the room and lifted Claire from the floor.

“You came,” she whispered.

“I should never have let you come here alone.”

Claire rested her head against his shoulder.

“My mother was supposed to be here.”

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“She called me twenty minutes ago. She said Grant threatened you.”

“That doesn’t make sense. She told me she would meet me downstairs.”

Daniel carried her into the hallway.

Behind them, officers searched the drawing room and secured Grant’s hands.

Claire noticed something near the base of the doorway.

A small silver button.

It was engraved with the symbol of a winged torch.

She had seen that symbol before.

“Dad,” she said. “Wait.”

Daniel stopped.

Claire pointed toward the object.

An officer picked it up with a gloved hand.

Daniel’s face changed when he saw it.

“Where did that come from?”

“It was on the floor.”

He stared at the winged torch.

Grant began shouting from behind them.

“Don’t touch it! Put it down!”

Everyone turned.

Grant’s fear was immediate and genuine.

Daniel stepped toward him while still holding Claire.

“What is this symbol?”

Grant looked toward the officers, then at the windows.

“They’ll know I told you.”

“Who will know?”

Grant swallowed.

“The people who made your career.”

Before Daniel could answer, Claire’s phone vibrated in Grant’s abandoned jacket pocket.

An officer retrieved it and handed it to her.

A photograph filled the screen.

It showed Claire entering the hospital two days earlier.

Behind her, partially reflected in the glass doors, stood Claire’s mother.

She was speaking to a man Claire did not recognize.

The message beneath it read:

ASK HER WHY SHE WAS THERE.

Claire lifted her gaze toward her father.

“Where is Mom?”

Daniel’s silence told her he did not know.

That was when Grant looked toward the dark eastern corridor and whispered the words that would return to Claire in nightmares.

“She’s already inside.”
