Chapter 9 - You Saved Us All
Victor confessed more than he realized.
He admitted creating false accounts, manipulating safety reports, and using Natalia’s family connections to hide transfers.
He also admitted ordering Anton to recover Irina’s files.
“I never wanted Irina dead,” he said. “I only wanted her frightened.”
Mikhail’s voice came from the doorway.
“She died because you believed fear was a tool.”
Victor spun around.
Rain blew through the open entrance as Mikhail walked into the diner.
Victor lifted the folder over the candle flame.
“One more step, and everything burns.”
Mikhail stopped.
Elena pressed the silent alarm beneath the counter.
Victor noticed.
“What did you do?”
“I made sure the truth survives.”
Police lights appeared outside.
Victor tried to escape, but Mr. Alvarez blocked one aisle while customers filled the other.
No one touched him.
They simply refused to move.
When police entered, Victor dropped the folder.
He was arrested along with his men.
Natalia was taken into custody the following morning for helping conceal financial transactions and revealing Misha’s location.
The diner’s camera had captured Victor’s full confession.
Combined with Irina’s records and Anton’s testimony, the evidence cleared Mikhail of wrongdoing.
As officers led Victor outside, Mikhail held Misha tightly.
Then he approached Elena.
“You fed my son,” he said, repeating the words from the night they met.
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
“And tonight, you saved us all.”
“No,” she replied. “Your wife saved you. Anton helped. The investigators came. Everyone here stood up.”
“You always refuse to take credit.”
“I’m a waitress. Sharing credit is how we survive a busy dinner rush.”
Mikhail laughed, a real laugh this time.
The sound surprised everyone, especially Misha.
Misha placed one hand in his father’s and the other in Elena’s.
“Can we eat now?”
Mr. Alvarez looked at the broken dishes and overturned chairs.
“The kitchen is still working.”

Elena turned the diner’s sign from closed to open.
Outside, the storm began to weaken.
