WHY IS SHE AFRAID OF YOU? / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Survived the Fire

The envelope had been hidden inside an old jewelry case in Evelyn’s private apartment.

Its paper had yellowed at the edges. Amelia Bennett’s name was written across the back in faded blue ink, followed by a date nearly twenty-six years earlier.

Three days after the apartment fire.

Three days after authorities claimed she was dead.

Clara held the envelope but did not open it immediately.

Her father stood near the window. Evelyn remained beside the fireplace, carrying the guilt of having kept it hidden for two weeks.

“Why was it addressed to me?” Clara asked.

Charles shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“You placed it inside the trust.”

“I never saw that envelope.”

Naomi examined the wax seal.

“It does not appear to have been opened.”

Evelyn said, “I wanted to. I nearly did.”

“But you hid it instead,” Clara replied.

“I thought Ryan was searching for it. I believed removing it from the study would protect you.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Because I read the words written beneath your name.”

Clara turned the envelope over.

A smaller line appeared beneath the address.

For Clara Bennett, when she becomes a mother.

Clara broke the seal.

Inside was a letter, a small brass key and half of a photograph.

She unfolded the letter.

My dearest Clara,

You do not know me, but our lives were connected before either of us had the power to choose.

If you are reading this, then you are carrying the next generation of our family. That means the person who has been waiting for the Bennett succession may already be near you.

Do not trust anyone who asks you to surrender your rights for the sake of your child. A protector will never demand your power as proof of love.

The Bennett trust contains more than money. Your grandfather used it to hide transactions that destroyed families, including mine. I attempted to expose him, and he attempted to erase me.

Charles believed I died in the fire. Allow him to believe it until the sealed accounts are secured.

My daughter is alive.

She carries the other half of the photograph and a key matching yours. Together, the keys open the private archive beneath the original Bennett estate.

Do not search for Elise until you control your own shares. Someone has watched our family for many years. That person will approach you through affection, loyalty or fear.

When the time comes, ask Charles who benefited from the fire.

Amelia

Clara read the final sentence again.

Then she handed the letter to her father.

Charles’s hands shook for the first time that night.

“She survived,” he whispered.

Naomi studied the brass key.

“The private archive mentioned in the letter is not listed among Bennett properties.”

Charles walked to the desk and opened a map of the old estate.

“My grandfather built an underground records room beneath the eastern garden. It was sealed before Clara was born.”

“Why?”

“He said water damage had made it unsafe.”

Naomi looked at him.

“Did you verify that?”

“No.”

Clara placed the half photograph on the table.

It showed Amelia standing beside a garden wall, holding a dark-haired toddler. The photograph had been torn vertically through the child’s face.

The other half would reveal the rest.

Daniel’s phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

“We found Margaret Doyle.”

Charles turned sharply.

“Where?”

“At a bus terminal outside the city.”

“Bring her here.”

“She refuses to come unless Clara speaks to her first.”

Daniel placed the call on video.

Margaret appeared on the screen.

Age had deepened the lines around her face, but she was unmistakably the woman from Ryan’s witness statement.

Clara sat across from the phone.

“You claimed you watched me sign Ryan’s documents.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“I did not.”

“Then why did you make the video?”

“Because Ryan threatened to release information that would expose Elise.”

“Where is she?”

“I do not know.”

Charles moved into view.

“You stole from the family.”

Margaret’s gaze hardened.

“I removed money your father had hidden through false charities. Amelia needed it to survive.”

“You let me believe you were a thief.”

“It was safer than allowing you to discover the truth.”

“You could have trusted me.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“You still worked inside your father’s company. You still signed the reports he placed in front of you. Amelia did not know whether you were his son or merely his replacement.”

Charles looked away.

Clara leaned closer to the screen.

“Why help Ryan?”

“I did not help him willingly. He found me eight months ago. He had already discovered the sealed beneficiary clause.”

“How?”

“Someone gave him access.”

“Lucas?”

“No. Lucas only provided company records. Ryan’s first contact was a woman.”

“The woman on the recordings?”

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

Margaret hesitated.

“I never saw her face.”

Clara held up Amelia’s letter.

“Do you recognize this?”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“You opened it.”

“It was written to me.”

“You were not supposed to receive it until Elise made contact.”

“My husband tried to declare me incapable and steal the trust. I think the waiting period has ended.”

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Ryan believed your baby would activate the final succession clause.”

“What clause?”

“If two Bennett bloodlines produce heirs, control of the protected archive passes to the mothers rather than the company chairman.”

Naomi moved closer.

“Clara and Elise?”

“Yes.”

“Does Elise have a child?”

“I don’t know.”

Charles asked, “Why did Ryan need Clara declared incapable?”

“To claim guardianship influence over both Clara’s voting shares and the unborn beneficiary’s future interest. But Ryan did not begin this plan alone.”

Clara’s hand tightened around the key.

“What did the woman promise him?”

“Half of Northstar Development after the merger.”

Naomi looked at Charles.

“Northstar was created to purchase Bennett Holdings with its own stolen assets.”

Margaret continued.

“Ryan became greedy. He decided he could take the company without sharing it. That is when the woman told me to begin watching him.”

“Why would she protect us?” Evelyn asked.

“I did not say she wanted to protect you.”

Margaret looked directly at Clara.

“She wants the archive. She needs your key.”

Clara glanced down at the small brass object.

“Does Ryan know I have it?”

“Not yet.”

Daniel asked, “What did you leave in the wine cabinet?”

“A memory card containing every meeting I recorded between Ryan, Lucas and Dr. Vale.”

Charles stepped closer to the phone.

“Why did you sign the witness statement?”

“Ryan held someone I care about.”

“Elise?”

“No.”

Margaret’s voice became unsteady.

“My son.”

Charles did not know she had a son.

“He is safe now,” Margaret continued. “That is why I was leaving.”

Naomi said, “We need your testimony at the board meeting.”

Margaret looked frightened.

“If I appear, the woman will know I betrayed her.”

“She already knows,” Clara said. “You left a message inside a house full of cameras.”

Margaret gave a sad smile.

“I hoped you were as observant as Amelia.”

Clara looked at the clock.

The board meeting would begin in six hours.

“Will you testify?”

Margaret remained silent.

Clara held the photograph toward the screen.

“My aunt trusted you with her child. I am trusting you with mine.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

When she opened them, the fear had not disappeared, but something stronger stood beside it.

“I will testify.”

The connection ended.

Daniel immediately sent a team to retrieve her.

Naomi began preparing the legal challenge.

Charles walked toward Clara.

“You will not carry the brass key into that meeting.”

“It belongs to me.”

“It makes you a target.”

“I was already a target before I knew it existed.”

“Then let Daniel secure it.”

Clara looked down at the key.

She considered the argument, then placed it in Daniel’s hand.

“Keep it on your person.”

Daniel nodded.

His phone sounded again.

A security alert appeared from the mansion.

Someone had entered the wine room.

Daniel opened the live camera.

Ryan stood in front of the cabinet.

He removed the hidden memory card.

Charles stared at the screen.

“How did he get back inside?”

Daniel checked the security logs.

“He used an access authorization issued from my office.”

“You did not authorize him.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“The request was approved using Evelyn Bennett’s private security code.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I never gave him that code.”

On the screen, Ryan placed the memory card in his pocket.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

He raised his phone and displayed a message.
