WHY IS SHE AFRAID OF YOU? / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Question Ryan Could Not Answer

The massive wooden doors struck the walls with a sound that silenced the entire mansion.

Charles Bennett entered like a storm.

Bright afternoon light poured through the high windows behind him, stretching his shadow across the reflective marble floor. His fitted black suit was still damp at the shoulders from the summer rain outside, and his gray hair had been pushed out of place by the wind. He did not look like the controlled chairman whose photograph appeared in business magazines.

He looked like a father who had received a telephone call no father should ever receive.

Evelyn hurried behind him, gathering the skirt of her white satin dress with one hand while trying to catch his arm with the other.

“Charles, wait!”

He barely seemed to hear her.

His gaze had already found Clara.

His heavily pregnant daughter lay curled near the bottom of the curved staircase. One hand protected her stomach while the other pressed against the cold floor. Her cream satin dress was wrinkled beneath her, and several strands of blonde hair had fallen across her face.

She was conscious.

She was breathing.

But she was staring at the young man standing behind her as though one wrong movement might make something terrible happen.

Ryan held a glass of red wine.

His dark-blue suit was perfectly arranged. His blond hair remained neatly combed. No panic marked his face, even though his pregnant wife was lying on the floor only a few feet away.

Charles crossed the room.

“What happened?”

Ryan lifted one shoulder.

“She fell.”

Charles stopped beside Clara.

He saw the faint discoloration near her wrist. He saw the way she pulled her arm closer when Ryan shifted his weight. Most of all, he saw the fear in her eyes.

Charles bent down, but he did not touch her until she gave the smallest nod.

“Clara,” he said. “Look at me.”

Her eyes moved toward him.

“Are you hurt?”

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Ryan stepped forward.

“She’s been emotional all week. The doctor warned me that her balance might be affected.”

Charles rose slowly.

He walked toward Ryan and stopped close enough to smell the wine in his glass.

Ryan attempted a smile.

“Mr. Bennett, this is a family matter. I have it under control.”

Charles looked at the wineglass.

Then he removed it from Ryan’s hand and placed it on a nearby table.

The base of the glass touched the polished wood with a quiet click.

Ryan’s smile disappeared.

Charles stepped between him and Clara.

“Then why is my daughter afraid of you?”

For the first time, Ryan’s confidence cracked.

His eyes moved toward Clara.

She flinched.

Ryan opened his mouth, but Charles raised one hand.

“No,” Charles said quietly. “Look at me when you answer.”

Evelyn reached Clara and lowered herself beside her.

“My darling, can you sit up?”

Clara caught her mother’s wrist.

“The study,” she whispered.

Evelyn leaned closer. “What did you say?”

“Don’t let him reach the study.”

Ryan’s expression changed so quickly that most people would have missed it.

Charles did not.

Ryan turned toward the hallway on the left side of the entrance.

Charles blocked his path.

“What is in the study?”

“Nothing,” Ryan said. “She’s confused.”

Clara shook her head.

“He took the key.”

Ryan’s voice sharpened.

“She needs medical attention, not an interrogation.”

Charles removed his phone from his pocket without taking his eyes off him.

“Daniel, enter the house.”

Less than ten seconds later, two members of Bennett family security appeared through the open doors. Daniel Price, Charles’s longtime security director, entered behind them.

Ryan stared at Charles.

“You brought guards to my home?”

Charles’s gaze moved around the marble hall.

“This house belongs to the Bennett family trust. You were allowed to live here because you married my daughter.”

His voice became colder.

“That permission can be withdrawn.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“You cannot remove me from my own residence.”

“Daniel,” Charles said, “make certain Mr. Hale does not leave this room.”

Ryan laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“This is absurd.”

Daniel positioned himself between Ryan and the hallway.

Evelyn helped Clara into a sitting position. Clara winced, but kept both hands protectively around her stomach.

Charles crouched beside her again.

“Did he push you?”

Clara’s eyes filled with shame.

It was not an answer.

It was worse than an answer.

Ryan moved forward.

“I did not touch her. She slipped near the stairs.”

Clara whispered, “He told me to say that.”

The mansion became silent.

Even the distant ticking of the antique clock seemed to stop.

Ryan’s face hardened.

“She is not thinking clearly.”

Charles looked at Daniel.

“Call Dr. Warren. Then call Naomi Cross.”

Ryan’s head turned sharply at the lawyer’s name.

“There is no reason to involve Naomi.”

“That depends on what is inside the study.”

Charles helped Evelyn raise Clara carefully. Together they guided her toward a sofa near the windows.

Ryan remained under Daniel’s watch while Charles crossed the entrance hall.

The study door stood at the end of a narrow passage.

Charles had designed that room himself twenty-six years earlier. It contained private company records, family agreements and an original copy of the Bennett inheritance trust.

Only three people were supposed to possess keys.

Charles.

Evelyn.

Clara.

When Charles reached the study, he found the door unlocked.

There were no scratches around the lock. No broken hinges. No sign of forced entry.

He pushed the door open.

The room smelled faintly of paper, cedarwood and the expensive cologne Ryan wore.

A desk drawer had been left open.

The small safe behind the painting was exposed.

Charles entered the code.

The safe door opened.

Inside were several property deeds, old photographs and the emergency reserve documents for Bennett Holdings.

The leather folder containing the original family trust was gone.

Charles heard Ryan speaking from the entrance hall.

“My wife signed the papers willingly.”

Charles returned to the doorway.

“What papers?”

Ryan adjusted his cuffs.

The fear had left his expression.

Something colder had replaced it.

“The documents granting me authority over Clara’s assets if she becomes incapable of making decisions.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

Ryan looked directly at Charles.

“As of nine o’clock this morning, Clara transferred temporary control of her voting shares to me.”

Clara tried to stand.

“I never agreed to that.”

“You signed it,” Ryan said.

“You wouldn’t let me read it.”

“That is not what the witness will say.”

Charles walked back into the hall.

“Who was the witness?”

Ryan’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“Her mother.”

Evelyn went completely still.

Charles looked at his wife.

She shook her head.

“I never witnessed anything.”

Ryan reached inside his jacket.

Daniel immediately moved closer, but Ryan slowly withdrew a folded legal document.

He held it out.

Charles took it from him.

At the bottom of the final page was Clara’s signature.

Beside it was Evelyn Bennett’s signature.

Both appeared genuine.

Clara stared at the page as if she had never seen her own name before.

Evelyn whispered, “That is not my signature.”

Ryan’s calm smile returned.

“The court may disagree.”

A vehicle stopped outside.

Charles expected Dr. Warren or Naomi.

Instead, a black sedan appeared beyond the open doors.

A thin man carrying a medical case stepped out.

Clara saw him and gripped her father’s sleeve.

Her fear returned with such force that her entire body trembled.

Ryan glanced toward the arriving visitor.

“Excellent,” he said. “The evaluator is here.”

Charles looked down at Clara.

“Who is he?”

May you like

She struggled to speak.

“The man who said he would take my baby away if I told you the truth.”
