Chapter 7 - The Ceremony That Never Began

Rosa gasped when she saw Elena.
“We need a doctor.”
“No,” Elena said. “We need my father.”
Nolan stepped into the hallway behind her.
“She had an accident.”
Rosa looked from Elena to Nolan.
She understood immediately.
Isaac arrived with two members of hotel security. Nolan tried to order them away, but Isaac refused.
“Elena decides who remains near her,” he said.
For the first time that morning, Nolan appeared nervous.
Elena could have ended everything in the hallway.
She could have shown the evidence to her father privately and allowed Nolan’s lawyers to control the public story.
Instead, she chose the ballroom.
Every person Nolan hoped to impress was waiting inside.
Every investor Victor Vale had deceived was seated beneath the chandeliers.
Every board member who had dismissed Elena as emotional was preparing to applaud her marriage.
Elena refused medical treatment until after the confrontation. Rosa cleaned the blood from her lip as gently as possible, but the bruise around her eye could not be hidden.
Maya arrived from the conference room.
When she saw Elena, her face became pale with anger.
“The investigators can arrest him now.”
“Not yet.”
“Elena.”
“He will say it was an accident. He will make my father believe him again.”
Maya glanced toward the ballroom doors.
“You do not owe anyone a performance.”
“No. But Nolan does.”
The orchestra began playing.
Thomas waited near the altar, unaware of what had happened upstairs.
Nolan entered the ballroom first.
He walked confidently down the aisle, smiling at guests and shaking hands. His father nodded with approval. His mother watched from the front row in a silver gown.
A hotel employee closed the doors behind him.
For a moment, Nolan believed the danger had passed.
Then the doors opened again.
Elena entered alone.
The guests rose.
The music continued for several seconds before the conductor noticed the bride’s face.
Thomas saw the bruise.
He stepped away from the altar.
“My dear daughter,” he said. “Who did this to you?”
Nolan made his mistake.
He believed Thomas’s loyalty belonged to the company.
He believed Elena had been weakened by years of doubt.
He believed the guests would protect him because they had invested too much money in the future he promised.
So he told the truth.
“I was just teaching her a lesson about how things work in our family.”
Thomas stared at him.
“This wedding is over.”
Nolan laughed.
Then Elena lifted her chin.
“And so is the lie your family built.”
She pressed the hidden button inside her bouquet.
The screens came to life.
The first image showed Nolan’s message to Rebecca.
After the marriage, Elena’s voting rights will be transferred. Her father can be removed before the next financial quarter.
The second showed payments stolen from Aurora House.
The third showed the false medical reports.
The fourth showed Victor Vale’s plan to force Ward Industries into bankruptcy.
Guests began rising from their seats.
Victor moved toward the exit.
Federal agents entered.
Nolan rushed toward Elena, but Thomas stepped between them.
The single punch was over almost as soon as it began.
Security separated the men.
Thomas pointed at Nolan.

“Touch her again, and you answer to all of us.”
This time, no one in the ballroom doubted Elena.
