Chapter 9 - The Consequences
Chloe was not arrested that afternoon, but the officers issued a formal trespass warning and opened an investigation into the forged documents.
The moving company refused to continue the job and transported the boxes back to storage after Richard agreed to pay an additional fee.
The yellow sedan was towed because Chloe had blocked part of the access road and refused repeated instructions to move it.
Richard and Evelyn spent two nights in a motel.
Carter did not offer them a room.
The silence afterward felt different from the peaceful silence he had known before. It carried grief, but it also carried relief.
Three days later, Evelyn called.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Carter waited.
She continued. “I should have stopped them.”
“Yes.”
“I kept telling myself we were only asking for help.”
“You never asked.”
“I know.”
For once, she did not cry until Carter forgave her. She did not mention everything she had done for him as a child. She did not ask him to rescue Chloe.
She simply admitted what she had done.
Carter gave his parents Nina Patel’s phone number and information about a senior apartment complex with affordable monthly rent.
“I will pay the deposit directly to the building,” he said. “That is the only financial help I’m offering.”
Richard initially refused out of pride.
Evelyn accepted.
They moved into a small two-bedroom apartment near a public park. It was not luxurious, but it was safe and fully theirs.
Richard found part-time work managing inventory at a hardware store. Evelyn began working mornings at a local library.
Without access to her parents’ remaining savings, Chloe was forced to face the lawsuits from her failed business. She sold the yellow sedan, entered a repayment plan, and moved into a studio apartment.
She blamed Carter for months.
Then the excuses stopped finding an audience.
