Chapter 6 - We Don’t Need Permission

Richard tried the key three times before looking up at the security camera.
Chloe climbed out of her car.
“What’s wrong?”
“He changed the lock.”
“Then call him.”
Richard pounded on the door instead.
“Carter!”
Carter remained upstairs while his phone began ringing.
First Richard called.
Then Evelyn.
Then Chloe.
Carter answered his father on the fifth attempt.
“What are you doing at my house?”
“We’re moving in.”
“You don’t have permission.”
“We don’t need permission. We’re your parents.”
Carter walked onto the balcony.
Below him, Evelyn stood near the truck with her hands folded anxiously. Chloe stared up at him as though he were an employee refusing an order.
Richard stepped away from the porch.
“You knew our rental ended.”
“I sent you other apartments.”
“We can’t waste money on rent when you have all this space.”
“It isn’t wasted space. It’s my home.”
The movers stood beside the truck, uncertain whether to begin.
Chloe pointed toward the boxes.
“We already paid them. Open the door.”
“No.”
Her face tightened.
“You’re really going to humiliate Mom and Dad in front of strangers?”
“You brought the strangers.”
Richard shouted toward the balcony. “Everything we did was for this family.”
“You sold your house for Chloe after I told you not to.”
“She needed us.”
“And now you want me to pay for that decision.”
“We only need a few months.”
Carter glanced at the boxes labeled for specific rooms.
“No, you don’t.”
Chloe followed his gaze and moved quickly to block the labels.
Carter lifted his phone.
“I’ve called the police.”
Evelyn began crying.
Richard stared up at him.
“You called the police on your own parents?”
“I called them about people attempting to enter my property after being denied permission.”
The movers quietly closed the truck’s loading ramp halfway.
Chloe shouted, “Open that door before you make this worse!”

Carter took a slow sip of coffee.
“You made it worse before you arrived.”
