TOUCH MY DAUGHTER AGAIN / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - Touch My Daughter Again)

The security recording later showed the entire confrontation lasted six minutes and forty two seconds.

For Maren, it felt endless.

Celeste had carried a concentrated derivative of the allergen identified in Maren's medical file.

She sprayed it near the table during the struggle.

The reaction was immediate.

Maren collapsed beside the overturned wheelchair.

Reed knelt.

For one second, instinct took over.

He reached toward her.

Then Celeste spoke.

"Don't."

He looked at his mother.

Celeste's eyes were cold.

"If she becomes medically incapacitated before the emergency trust challenge is finalized, the transfer can still be disputed."

Reed stared.

"What?"

"You heard me."

Maren gasped.

"Reed... I can't breathe..."

His face twisted.

Three years of marriage.

Thirty nine years of being Celeste's son.

Fear.

Guilt.

Cowardice.

Everything collided behind his eyes.

Then he made the worst decision available.

He hesitated.

"You're being dramatic."

Maren would remember those words longer than any apology.

Celeste came closer.

"Just let it happen."

Reed turned and pulled out his phone.

He called the private emergency contact Celeste had once used.

"Wait seven minutes... then call 911."

Celeste smiled.

Maren's vision darkened.

But beneath the dining table was the silent Blackthorne emergency trigger installed two days earlier.

She reached.

Pressed.

Reed's phone vibrated.

Then every device connected to the Vale network began receiving security alerts.

Hidden doors unlocked.

Exterior controls transferred to Blackthorne.

The offshore money transfer froze.

Emergency medical services were automatically notified.

Reed stared.

"What...?"

Celeste's smile vanished.

"What's wrong?"

Maren forced air through her tightening throat.

"Opened... the house."

The front door swung inward.

Four Blackthorne agents entered.

Behind them came Evelyn.

She had been stationed outside because Maren had made her promise not to enter unless the alarm activated.

Now nothing could have kept her out.

"Move."

An agent pulled Reed away.

Another immediately administered emergency treatment.

Maren felt a needle.

Air still would not come.

Then a mask covered her face.

Celeste backed toward the staircase.

Evelyn knelt beside Maren.

The world blurred.

Maren saw her mother's face.

Fear.

Rage.

Love.

Then Evelyn looked at Reed.

"Touch my daughter again..."

Her voice cracked.

Reed stood frozen.

Evelyn rose.

"Finish that sentence," Celeste said.

Evelyn turned toward her.

"No."

Celeste blinked.

Evelyn pointed toward the Blackthorne body cameras.

"Because unlike you, I don't need threats."

Police entered behind her.

"I need witnesses."

Celeste tried to run through the conservatory.

Two officers stopped her.

She fought.

Screamed.

Called them thieves.

Called Maren ungrateful.

Called Evelyn insane.

No one listened.

Reed remained beside the wall.

An officer approached him.

He held out his hands.

"I delayed calling for help."

The officer stared.

Reed continued.

"It's recorded."

He looked toward Maren.

"I did it."

That admission did not save him.

It did, however, end the last lie.

Maren lost consciousness in the ambulance.

She woke fourteen hours later.

Evelyn was sleeping in a chair beside the hospital bed with one hand still wrapped around Maren's wrist.

Maren watched her for several minutes.

Thirty three years.

Then Evelyn woke suddenly.

"Maren?"

"I'm here."

Evelyn stood.

"Doctor."

"I'm okay."

"Doctor."

"Mum."

Evelyn froze again at the word.

Maren smiled weakly.

"Sit down."

Evelyn sat.

Her face crumpled.

"I almost lost you again."

"But you didn't."

"I should never have allowed that dinner."

"You didn't allow anything."

"I knew it was dangerous."

"So did I."

"Maren."

"No."

She squeezed Evelyn's hand.

"You don't get to become Celeste just because you're afraid."

Evelyn stared at her.

Then laughed through tears.

"That was cruelly accurate."

"I learned from architects. Structural honesty."

Evelyn leaned over and kissed her forehead.

Police arrested Celeste on new charges including attempted murder, witness intimidation, financial fraud and violation of bail conditions.

Reed was charged separately for his failure to render aid, conspiracy connected to the earlier crash and financial crimes.

The ledger was recovered.

The offshore transfers remained frozen.

For the first time since 1993, every surviving piece of the Mercer theft existed in one legal record.

But Maren's greatest victory came three days later.

Lena entered the hospital room with a walker.

"Ready?"

Maren looked at it.

Evelyn stood nearby.

Marcus watched from the door.

Maren swung her legs over the bed.

She stood.

One step.

Then another.

Pain shot through her back.

She kept going.

Five steps.

Ten.

At fifteen, she stopped.

Not because her legs failed.

Because she was crying too hard to see.

Evelyn came beside her.

Maren whispered, "They didn't get to keep this."

"No."

"They didn't get to keep me."

May you like

Evelyn smiled.

"No."
