TOUCH MY DAUGHTER AGAIN / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Dinner Invitation)

Celeste disappeared for nine days.

Blackthorne monitored airports.

Private aviation records.

Family properties.

Corporate apartments.

Nothing.

Reed insisted he had no contact with her.

Marcus believed him.

Maren did not know what to believe.

Then the invitation arrived.

Cream paper.

Black ink.

No return address.

Dinner.

Vale Mansion.

8 p.m.

Come alone if you want the original Mercer ledger.

Maren stared at the card.

Evelyn tore it in half.

"No."

"Mum."

It was the first time Maren had called her that.

Both women noticed.

Neither acknowledged it immediately.

Evelyn placed the torn pieces on the table.

"Absolutely not."

"The ledger could prove every transfer."

"We already have enough."

"Not enough to restore assets to all the families affected."

"Not worth your life."

Maren looked at her.

For thirty three years, Evelyn had been chasing evidence.

Now she was asking Maren to walk away from it.

That mattered.

Maren nodded.

"Fine."

Evelyn narrowed her eyes.

"That was too easy."

Maren smiled.

"I said I wouldn't go alone."

The plan took two days.

Blackthorne installed silent alarms throughout the mansion.

A medical team waited nearby.

Security occupied concealed positions.

Police had no basis to arrest Celeste merely for sending an invitation, but investigators agreed to remain minutes away.

Reed insisted on attending.

"No."

"Maren, she'll talk to me."

"That's exactly why you're not coming."

"She trusts me."

"She used you."

"I know."

"Do you?"

His jaw tightened.

"Let me do one decent thing."

Maren studied him.

Finally, Marcus agreed Reed could enter first wearing a recording device.

The dinner took place in the same dining room.

Maren wore the champagne satin dress Celeste had once chosen for another family event.

Not because she wanted to recreate anything.

Because she wanted Celeste to see she remembered.

The overturned wheelchair was not planned.

That came later.

At 7:58 p.m., Celeste entered through the conservatory.

She wore a cream silk robe beneath a long coat.

Maren almost laughed at the theatrical familiarity.

Celeste noticed.

"What?"

"You really do repeat yourself."

Celeste removed the coat.

A wine glass waited on the table.

She poured from an unopened bottle.

"No poison tonight."

"Comforting."

Reed entered.

Celeste stopped.

"You."

"Hello, Mom."

"You chose her."

Reed looked at Maren.

"No."

He turned back.

"I chose myself."

Celeste laughed.

"You don't have a self without this family."

"That's what you taught me."

"And now?"

"Now I'm learning you were wrong."

For the first time, Maren saw real hurt in Celeste's face.

It vanished instantly.

She opened a leather case.

Inside was the original Mercer ledger.

Evelyn's father's handwriting appeared across several pages.

Richard Beaumont's fraudulent transfer notes followed.

It was everything.

Maren reached for it.

Celeste closed the case.

"Not yet."

"What do you want?"

"Control of the Harrison trust."

"No."

"The mansion."

"No."

"My legal defense funded."

"No."

Celeste smiled.

"Then why are we here?"

"Because you wanted an audience."

Something flickered in Celeste's eyes.

Maren continued.

"You could have destroyed the ledger. Instead you brought it."

Reed looked toward his mother.

Maren said, "You don't want money as much as you want someone to know you still have power."

Celeste slowly lifted her wine.

"Your mother used to speak like that."

"Good."

"She lost."

"Did she?"

Celeste's expression changed.

Reed's phone vibrated.

A message.

He looked down.

Then at Maren.

It was not part of the plan.

"What is it?"

He showed her.

A bank alert.

Then another.

Multiple Vale accounts were transferring funds.

Celeste smiled.

"Insurance."

Marcus's voice came through Maren's hidden earpiece.

We see it. Offshore movement. Keep her talking.

Maren asked, "Where are you sending it?"

"Somewhere Harrison can never return it from."

Reed snapped, "That's employee pension money."

Celeste shrugged.

"Collateral."

Maren felt fury.

"You would steal from thousands of people because you lost control?"

"I haven't lost anything."

Then Celeste's hand moved.

Fast.

She threw the wine into Reed's face and shoved the table toward Maren.

The wheelchair beside Maren tipped.

Maren lost balance.

She struck the hardwood.

The fall triggered everything.

Security moved.

But Celeste had jammed the dining room doors electronically.

Reed wiped wine from his eyes.

Maren tried to stand.

Her throat tightened.

Not from panic.

Something else.

She looked at the untouched food.

Then at the perfume atomizer Celeste had dropped.

Aerosolized allergen.

Celeste stepped backward.

Reed froze.

"Mom..."

Maren clawed at her throat.

May you like

"Reed... I can't breathe..."

And the night caught up to the scene that had begun this story.
