Chapter 14 - The Killer in the Room
No one moved.
Thomas kept the gun near Claire.
Margaret stood at the bottom of the stairs. Bell, Laura, Anna and Stephen remained several steps above her.
Evelyn watched through the screen.
“Who killed Dr. Kirk?” Claire asked.
“I cannot say the name yet.”
“Why not?”
“Because I need the killer to make one final choice.”
Thomas aimed his gun at the camera.
“You always loved performances.”
Evelyn ignored him.
“Samuel Kirk helped create Anna’s false death certificate. For twenty-three years, he accepted payments to remain silent. Last month, he contacted me. He wanted protection.”
“From Thomas?” Claire asked.
“No. From the person who arranged the original deception.”
Claire looked at Richard in her memory.
But Richard was not in Bellhaven.
“Malcolm?” Stephen asked.
“He handled the legal documents,” Evelyn said. “He did not create the plan.”
Anna’s face became pale.
“Who else was involved?”
Evelyn looked directly toward her.
“You already know.”
Anna shook her head.
“No.”
“Think about the morning after Northpoint. Who brought you the passport?”
Anna stared at Margaret.
“Elise.”
Margaret did not react.
“Who told you that Claire and Owen would be safe if you left?” Evelyn asked.
Anna’s breathing changed.
“Elise did.”
Claire turned toward Margaret.
“You convinced my mother to disappear.”
“I helped her survive.”
“You helped my father erase her.”
“Richard’s threat was real.”
Evelyn’s voice hardened.
“You ensured Anna never testified about Northpoint.”
Margaret removed her gloves.
Scars covered both hands.
“The fire nearly killed her. The company would have destroyed her in court.”
“So you decided for her,” Claire said.
Margaret looked at Claire.
“I decided two children needed a mother who was alive, even if they could not know it.”
“You sound exactly like my father.”
The insult struck its target.
Margaret’s face tightened.
Evelyn continued.
“Samuel Kirk planned to confess. Margaret could not allow that.”
Thomas began laughing.
Margaret looked toward him.
“You think this helps you?”
“It confirms what I always knew. Loyalty is a story weak people tell before choosing themselves.”
“Did you kill him?” Claire asked Margaret.
Margaret did not answer.
Bell moved one step downward.
The laser points reappeared across his chest.
Thomas spoke to the unseen guards.
“Hold your positions.”
Evelyn’s image remained steady.
“Margaret, this is your final chance. Release everyone, surrender the patent archive and testify against Thomas.”
Margaret laughed softly.
“You still believe you are in control.”
“I know where you moved the archive.”
For the first time, Margaret appeared afraid.
Evelyn continued.
“Lisbon. Beneath the Mercer Foundation.”
Thomas looked at Margaret.
“You told me it had been destroyed.”
“I told you what was necessary.”
Thomas raised the gun toward her.
Margaret pressed a control hidden inside her sleeve.
The lights went out.
Gunfire erupted.
Claire dropped behind the vault frame.
Bell shouted.
Anna screamed Stephen’s name.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Thomas fired toward the staircase.
Margaret vanished into the darkness.
Laura tackled Thomas.
The gun slid across the floor.
Claire kicked it into the vault.
Bell reached Stephen and pulled him behind a concrete pillar.
The unseen guards fled through upper corridors as police units breached the building.
When the lights returned, Thomas lay handcuffed beneath Laura’s knee.
Margaret was gone.
Anna had been struck by falling debris but remained conscious.
Stephen was unharmed.
The video screen had gone dark.
“Grandma!” Claire shouted.
No response.
Bell searched the chamber.
A service passage stood open behind the stairs.
Margaret had escaped.
Police recovered computers, weapons and financial documents from the customs building. None contained the patent archive.
Thomas refused to speak.
As officers escorted him outside, he stopped beside Claire.
“Evelyn has not told you the most important truth.”
“You have lied to everyone for fifty years.”
“And she has not?”
“What truth?”
Thomas looked toward Anna.
“Ask your mother who Claire’s biological father is.”
Anna froze.
Claire stared at her.
Thomas smiled as officers pulled him away.
“Another family secret,” he called. “Rose collected them like jewelry.”
Claire approached Anna.
“What did he mean?”
“Nothing.”
“Do not lie to me.”
“This is not the time.”
“You disappeared for twenty-three years. You don’t get to decide when I hear the truth.”
Anna looked exhausted.
“Richard is your father.”
“Biologically?”
Anna did not answer.
Claire stepped back.
Stephen avoided her eyes.
“You knew?” Claire asked him.
“No.”
“But you suspected.”
“I heard arguments when you were a baby.”
“Between whom?”
“Richard and Thomas.”
“What did they say?”
Stephen hesitated.
“Thomas accused Anna of having an affair with someone at Halcyon.”
Anna closed her eyes.
Claire’s voice shook.
“Who?”
Before Anna could answer, Claire’s phone rang.
Benjamin Rhodes.
“The merger meeting has been moved forward,” he said.
“To when?”
“Six o’clock this morning.”
“That’s in less than four hours.”
“Sentinel Crown claims the arrest of Thomas Bennett creates an emergency requiring immediate stabilization.”
“Can they proceed without him?”
“Margaret Mercer has appeared remotely as acting chairwoman.”
Claire looked toward the open service passage.
“She escaped so she could control the vote.”
“Yes.”
“Has my authority been activated?”
“Only if you present the check in person.”
“I’m four hours away.”
“The bank has arranged a helicopter.”
Claire looked at Anna.
Questions burned inside her, but the company, its employees and thousands of residents could lose protection before sunrise.
“I’m going back to Westbridge.”
Anna took her arm.
“Claire, about your father.”
“Later.”
“What if there is no later?”
Claire pulled away.
“There hasn’t been a later for twenty-three years.”
She followed Laura toward the exit.
Outside, snow began falling over Bellhaven Harbor.
As Claire boarded the helicopter, she received another message from Evelyn.
