Chapter 13 - Bellhaven

The train traveled north through fields buried in snow.

Claire sat beside Anna while Laura and Detective Bell occupied seats several rows behind them. Police units were moving separately toward Bellhaven, but Bell insisted they maintain the appearance that Claire was following the kidnappers’ instructions.

Vivian had begged to come.

Bell refused.

Owen remained in Westbridge to prepare the legal challenge against the merger. Benjamin worked with the bank to activate Claire’s provisional voting rights.

The merger meeting would begin the following morning.

They had less than twenty-four hours.

Claire watched the frozen landscape.

“Did Grandma ever talk about Margaret?”

“Never by name,” Anna said. “But during my years abroad, I sometimes met a woman who looked familiar. She was about Evelyn’s age and always wore gloves.”

“Why gloves?”

“I assumed arthritis.”

“Could she have been hiding scars?”

“Possibly.”

“What did she give you?”

“Money, identity documents and instructions from Evelyn.”

“So Margaret helped protect you.”

“Or helped monitor me.”

Claire looked at her mother.

“Do you regret leaving?”

“Every day.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Anna accepted the accusation.

“Yes. I regret it.”

“Would you make the same choice now?”

“No.”

“Even if you believed Owen and I were in danger?”

“I would take you with me. I would go to the police, the press, anyone who would listen. Fear convinced me that disappearing was protection.”

Claire looked back toward the window.

“Grandma helped you stay away.”

“She believed Richard and Thomas had influence everywhere. She also believed she needed time to collect undeniable evidence.”

“Twenty-three years is a long time.”

“Evelyn was taught to endure instead of confront. She changed too slowly.”

The train arrived in Bellhaven beneath a gray sky.

The town’s old industrial district stretched along the harbor. Empty warehouses faced dark water. Rusted cranes stood like skeletons above the docks.

The customs building was constructed from red brick, with boarded windows and a stone emblem carved above the entrance.

A woman waited on the steps.

She wore a long black coat and red leather gloves.

From a distance, Claire thought Evelyn had been found.

Then the woman turned.

Her face resembled Evelyn’s, but the expression was harder.

Margaret Mercer.

“Claire,” she said. “You took longer than expected.”

“Where is Stephen?”

“Alive.”

“Where is Grandma?”

Margaret smiled.

“You ask about the wrong hostage first.”

“He is my uncle. She is my grandmother. I asked about both.”

“Evelyn was correct about you.”

“Did you kidnap Stephen?”

“I arranged transportation.”

“Against his will.”

“He resisted.”

Bell stepped forward.

Margaret looked at him.

“Detective, there are three rifles aimed at this entrance. Your officers are welcome to test my patience.”

Bell stopped.

Claire held up the check envelope.

“You wanted this.”

“I want what it opens.”

“You already know.”

“I know it grants you temporary authority. I do not know which final protections Evelyn embedded inside it.”

“Why are you helping Thomas?”

Margaret laughed.

“Thomas believes I help him.”

“Do you control Sentinel Crown?”

“In part.”

“You purchased Bennett Meridian’s debt.”

“Yes.”

“You forced Richard into the merger.”

“Richard was not forced. He borrowed money to conceal losses, then borrowed more to conceal the borrowing.”

“Where is Thomas?”

“Searching for Evelyn.”

“You don’t know where she is?”

“No one knows where Evelyn goes when she finally chooses herself.”

Margaret opened the customs-building door.

“Come inside.”

The group entered a vast records hall.

Stephen sat tied to a chair near the center. He appeared frightened but unharmed.

Thomas stood beside him.

He looked at Margaret with fury.

“You brought the police.”

“I brought witnesses,” Margaret replied.

Thomas turned toward Claire.

“Give me the check.”

Claire looked at Stephen.

“Release him.”

Thomas untied Stephen and pushed him forward.

Stephen stumbled toward Bell.

“Now,” Thomas said.

Claire handed the envelope to Margaret instead.

Thomas’s face darkened.

“You foolish girl.”

Margaret opened it.

Inside was a photocopy.

She smiled.

“Evelyn’s granddaughter.”

Thomas drew a gun.

Bell and Laura reached for their weapons.

Red laser points appeared on their chests.

“No one moves,” Thomas said.

Margaret seemed unconcerned.

“You still confuse weapons with authority.”

“And you still confuse betrayal with intelligence.”

Thomas aimed at her.

“You gave Rose the records.”

“I gave my sister a chance.”

“You helped her hide Anna.”

“I corrected one of your mistakes.”

“You spent forty years beside me.”

“I spent forty years waiting for you to reveal where you buried the patent archive.”

Thomas laughed.

“It was never here.”

Margaret’s confidence shifted.

“What?”

“The customs vault is empty.”

Claire looked toward the basement stairs.

“Then why bring us?”

Thomas tapped the floor with his cane.

“To open the original Halcyon accounting system.”

He pointed at Claire.

“The check activates Rosebridge access. Claire is the key.”

Margaret looked at her sister’s granddaughter.

“Do not help him.”

Thomas raised the gun toward Stephen.

“Then another Bennett dies.”

Stephen froze.

Claire walked toward the basement.

“I’ll open it.”

Bell started to object.

Claire shook her head.

They descended into an underground chamber containing an enormous mechanical vault door.

A narrow slot matched the dimensions of the check.

Claire removed the original from a hidden pocket inside her sleeve.

Thomas stood behind her.

“Insert it.”

“What is inside?”

“The truth about your grandmother.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It is the only one you deserve.”

Claire inserted the check halfway.

The vault mechanism activated.

A scanner read the document.

ACCESS RECOGNIZED.

A second message appeared.

VOICE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Thomas smiled.

“Say your full name.”

Claire looked at the screen.

“No.”

He pressed the gun against her back.

“Say it.”

Claire leaned toward the microphone.

“Claire Rose Bennett.”

The system paused.

Then displayed another message.

DUAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

ROSE EVELYN MERCER BENNETT CONFIRM PRESENCE.

Thomas stared at the screen.

“She must be here.”

A speaker activated above them.

Evelyn’s voice filled the chamber.

“I am.”

The vault door began to open.

Thomas turned wildly.

“Rose?”

No one stood behind them.

The voice came through the system.

“You were always too impatient, Thomas.”

The vault opened completely.

Inside were no patent records.

Only a live video screen.

Evelyn appeared from an unknown location.

“Claire,” she said, “the merger meeting begins in sixteen hours.”

“Where are you?”

“I am safe.”

“Come home.”

“I cannot.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas is not the person who ordered Dr. Kirk’s death.”

Everyone looked toward Thomas.

May you like

Evelyn continued.

“The killer is standing in the customs building with you.”
