Chapter 9 - The Murder Connor Could Not Remember
The video included evidence.
A bloodstained child’s jacket.
A photograph of six-year-old Connor near a wooded quarry.
A police report stating Adrian Vane vanished the same weekend.
And an audio recording of Teresa asking a child, “What did you push?”
A small voice answered, “The man.”
Connor listened three times.
“It sounds like me.”
Daniel looked sick.
Amy refused the conclusion. “A child’s voice can be manipulated.”
“This recording is decades old.”
“So is lying.”
Elias demanded a meeting at Crown House, the original estate beyond the city. He gave them twenty-four hours. If they contacted federal authorities, files accusing Connor of murder would be sent to every major news outlet.
Ortiz argued for an immediate tactical operation.
Connor worried about officials named in the ledgers. “We don’t know who is compromised.”
“Then we choose a small team.”
Daniel finally confessed the memory he had buried.
On the night Adrian disappeared, Teresa arrived at Daniel’s home with Connor asleep in the back seat. Connor’s shirt was muddy. His hands were scratched. Teresa said they had gone walking and Connor fell.
Days later, Daniel heard about Adrian.
He questioned Connor gently. Connor remembered a man shouting at Teresa near a quarry. He remembered Teresa telling him to hide. Then a loud sound. Then darkness.
“I thought you witnessed something,” Daniel said. “I never believed you killed him.”
Connor struggled to breathe.
“What if I did?”
“You were six.”
“What if she used me?”
Amy held his face. “Then you were a victim.”
The question became not whether Connor remembered, but whether Teresa had planted a false memory decades before Crown House perfected its methods.
The audio cassettes from the vault offered a clue. One featured Teresa discussing “memory conditioning” with a psychiatrist, Dr. Samuel Rusk. He described using repetition, sensory cues, and parental authority to make children accept narratives they could not distinguish from experience.
Dr. Rusk still practiced under a different name.
Ortiz located him at a private retirement facility.
He agreed to talk only after seeing the Crown House ledgers.
Rusk admitted treating Connor.
Teresa had brought the child for six sessions after Adrian vanished. She asked Rusk to reinforce a story: Connor had pushed Adrian during an argument.
“Did he?” Connor asked.
Rusk shook his head. “The boy had no memory of touching Adrian.”
“Then why create one?”
“To protect the person who did.”
“Teresa?”
Rusk’s silence was answer enough.
He revealed something else.
Adrian had not died at the quarry.
Rusk saw him two weeks later in Elias Vane’s estate, injured but alive.
“Why did he disappear?”
“Because Elias locked him away.”
Amy felt cold. “For thirty years?”
Rusk looked toward the door.
“Crown House did not begin as a property scheme. Property funded the real work.”
“What work?”
“Producing heirs who could be controlled.”
Before he could explain, the facility lost power.
A single gunshot sounded in the corridor.
When emergency lights flickered on, Dr. Rusk was dead.
