Chapter 14 - The Judge Who Controlled the Investigation
Chief Justice Helen Vale appeared on television promising transparency.
She called Crown House “a stain on the legal system” and announced an independent commission. Her voice was measured, maternal, and outraged.
In the archive, her signature appeared on placement orders, sealed guardianships, and identity corrections spanning thirty years.
Ortiz wanted to arrest her immediately.
Federal prosecutors hesitated. The documents were powerful but required authentication. Vale controlled access to old court records and could claim her signature had been forged like Connor’s.
Amy understood the danger.
The investigation itself had been placed under Crown House control.
Connor and Adrian studied the archive for evidence no commission could bury. They found references to audio sessions labeled VALE—SUCCESSION. The corresponding tapes were missing.
Daniel remembered a second compartment in the foundation vault, one not opened by the black key.
The mechanism required two blood descendants to press separate plates simultaneously.
Connor and Adrian returned under federal guard.
When they opened the compartment, they found a single modern hard drive.
Someone had accessed it within the last year.
The drive contained video meetings between Elias and Helen Vale.
Vale was not merely a participant.
She was Adrian’s older half-sister.
Elias had positioned one child inside the legal system and imprisoned the other. Vale spent decades turning Crown House methods into court procedure.
In the most recent video, recorded two months earlier, Vale discussed Connor and Amy.
“The pair remain resistant,” she said.
Elias replied, “Teresa will create the domestic event.”
“And the child?”
“Transfer before the first birthday.”
Frederick was nine months old.
Connor copied the video to multiple encrypted locations.
Before prosecutors could act, Judge Vale issued emergency orders sealing the archive, removing Ortiz from the case, and transferring Teresa, Marcus, and Maren to a federal medical facility.
The orders were procedurally impossible but enforced by officers who believed them valid.
By the time anyone challenged them, the transport vehicles were empty.
All three prisoners were gone.
Vale held a press conference blaming a security failure.
That evening, Connor released a short portion of the video through several international journalists. Public outrage made suppression impossible.
Vale denied everything and claimed artificial manipulation.
Then Elias Vane was found dead inside Crown House.
He sat in the high-backed library chair with Teresa’s silver bracelet wrapped around his cane.
Cause of death appeared to be poison.
Teresa became the obvious suspect.
But Adrian noticed something in the crime-scene photograph.
Elias wore a gold ring on his right hand.
At the midnight meeting, he had worn it on his left.
“The body was staged,” Adrian said.
“Or it isn’t Elias,” Amy replied.
DNA testing confirmed the corpse was a close Vane relative, but not Elias.
A brother no one knew existed.
The real Elias remained alive.
And someone had sacrificed a member of the family to buy him time.
That night, Amy received a message from her dead mother’s phone number.
It contained a photograph of Ruth Keller, alive, standing beside Judge Vale.
The timestamp was current.
