Chapter 9 - The Husband She No Longer Knew

Olivia watched the hostage recording six times.
David believed it could be staged.
Elena believed Brandon had staged it himself.
Rebecca said nothing.
On the seventh viewing, Olivia noticed Brandon tapping two fingers against his knee.
Three taps.
Pause.
Two taps.
Pause.
Four taps.
It was a private code they once used during social events.
Three meant leave.
Two meant danger.
Four meant lie.
Brandon was warning her not to follow the demand.
Or he wanted her to believe that.
Olivia called the number associated with the video.
A masked voice answered.
“Do you have the key?”
“Yes.”
Elena looked sharply at her.
“Then you will arrive in Zurich tomorrow.”
“I need proof Brandon is alive.”
The camera activated.
Brandon sat in the same room, but the gunman was gone.
“Say something only I would recognize,” Olivia demanded.
Brandon looked exhausted.
“The night we met, you told me you hated lilies.”
Olivia remembered.
He had arrived for their first date carrying lilies. She sneezed through dinner. He spent the evening apologizing.
“That could be in a message.”
Brandon’s mouth twisted.
“You kept one flower pressed inside Jonathan’s copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.”
Olivia’s chest tightened.
No one else knew.
“Why?”
“Because it was the first time I made you laugh after your father died.”
The masked voice returned.
“Proof delivered.”
The connection ended.
Elena confronted Olivia.
“You cannot bring them the key.”
“I’m not planning to.”
“You said yes.”
“I need them to prepare for my arrival.”
David began creating a false key and travel plan. Rebecca contacted trusted aviation security. Elena argued that every system might be compromised.
Olivia withdrew to the apartment’s small bedroom.
On the table beside the bed lay the wedding dress.
She touched the damaged fabric.
The stain smelled faintly metallic.
Not blood.
Ink.
She examined the bodice and discovered lines hidden within the dark pattern.
Numbers.
A bank routing sequence.
Brandon had sent the dress.
The hostage takers likely added the note and video, but Brandon selected the object.
He wanted Olivia to find something.
She photographed the sequence and gave it to Rebecca.
The numbers led to a domestic account opened by Margaret fourteen years earlier.
Its transaction history contained regular payments from Roland’s trusts.
Most ended after Thomas Hale died.
One continued.
A monthly payment of ten thousand dollars labeled care services.
The recipient was the Rosehaven Neurological Institute in Vermont.
David called the institute under legal authority.
A patient had been housed there for nearly fourteen years under strict privacy protection.
The patient’s name was Thomas Hale.
Brandon’s father was alive.
The public heart attack, funeral, and cremation had been staged.
They traveled to Vermont before dawn.
Rosehaven occupied a secluded former monastery surrounded by pine forest. The director resisted until David presented evidence of fraud connected to the patient’s admission.
Thomas Hale lived in a locked private wing.
Olivia expected a calculating patriarch.
Instead, she found a fragile man sitting near a window, his silver hair thin and his hands trembling.
He recognized her.
“Jonathan’s girl.”
“Where is Brandon?”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“Always the first question. Even after what he did.”
“Do you know where he is?”
“Roland has him.”
“Why?”
“Because Brandon refused to finish the contract.”
Elena stepped closer.
“What contract?”
Thomas looked at her scar.
“You survived.”
“So did you.”
“Not in any way that mattered.”
He explained that Roland ordered Brandon to trigger the reconciliation trust after Olivia inherited full operational control. Brandon was supposed to create evidence that Olivia misused company funds, provoke a divorce, and transfer her voting shares into Victor’s trusteeship.
“But he forged his own name,” Thomas said. “He made himself the criminal.”
Olivia stared.
“Why would he do that?”
“To delay the trust. To give you evidence against him.”
Elena dismissed it.
“He stole millions.”
“He moved millions where Roland could see them. Every visible crime made Roland believe the plan continued.”
“What about the money Brandon spent?”
Thomas gave a bitter laugh.
“My son has expensive weaknesses. Heroism did not cure them.”
The truth was not clean.
Brandon had betrayed Olivia.
He had also sabotaged the people controlling him.
He loved her and exploited her.
He protected her while lying every day.
Olivia asked, “Why did Margaret obey Roland?”
“Fear. Greed. Habit.”
“And you?”
“I tried to leave.”
Thomas looked toward the locked door.
“This is where men who try to leave Roland are placed.”
Elena asked how they staged his death.
“With Victor’s help.”
“Where is Caroline?”
Thomas’s face changed.
“Caroline is not Roland’s prisoner.”
“You saw the photograph?”
“I was there when it was taken.”
Olivia stepped forward.
“Why were they together?”
“They formed a temporary alliance after Jonathan discovered Hearthstone had been compromised.”
“Against whom?”
Thomas lowered his voice.
“The custodian who stole the original reserve.”
“Who?”
Before he could answer, the institute’s alarm sounded.
Smoke began entering beneath the door.
David opened it.
The corridor was burning.
Security personnel rushed Thomas into a wheelchair while sprinklers activated.
A nurse shouted that the rear exit had been blocked.
Olivia pushed the chair toward the chapel wing.
Behind them, a masked man emerged through the smoke.
He fired twice.
Elena fell.
Olivia screamed and dropped beside her.
Blood spread across Elena’s coat.
The attacker advanced.
Thomas reached beneath his blanket and pulled out a small pistol.
His first shot struck the wall.
His second struck the attacker’s shoulder.
David tackled the gunman.
Security officers restrained him.
Olivia pressed both hands against Elena’s wound.
“Stay with me.”
Elena opened her eyes.
“Zurich,” she whispered.
“We’ll get there.”
“Do not open the account with Brandon.”
“Why?”
Elena struggled to breathe.
“Because he isn’t Jonathan’s contract heir.”
Olivia leaned closer.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
Elena looked toward Thomas.
“Ask him which Hale son was promised to you.”
