Chapter 10 - The Brother Without a Name

Elena survived surgery.

The bullet passed beneath her collarbone and missed a major artery. Doctors expected a long recovery but believed she would live.

Thomas disappeared during the evacuation.

Security footage showed a nurse pushing his wheelchair toward an ambulance. The nurse’s credentials were false. The ambulance never reached the hospital.

The captured attacker carried no identification.

He died from poisoning before investigators could question him.

A dissolving capsule had been hidden inside one of his teeth.

Olivia returned to the secure apartment with more questions than answers.

“Which Hale son was promised to you?”

Thomas had spoken of Brandon as the eldest son.

Public records listed Brandon as an only child.

David searched sealed birth registries.

Six months before Brandon was born, Margaret gave birth to another boy at a private hospital in New Jersey.

The child was named Gabriel.

The certificate was amended eight days later.

The parents’ names were removed.

No adoption record followed.

The infant vanished legally.

Rebecca found a photograph from Thomas Hale’s files.

Margaret sat in a hospital bed holding two infants.

Twins.

One dark-haired.

One fair-haired.

Brandon had a twin brother.

“Why erase one child?” Olivia asked.

Elena answered through a secure hospital call.

“Because Roland demanded a future heir. Thomas and Margaret decided one son would remain visible while the other was trained privately.”

“Which was which?”

“We never knew.”

David compared childhood photographs of Brandon with the hospital image. Facial recognition produced inconclusive results.

Elena continued.

“One son was meant to marry you. The other was meant to take control afterward.”

Olivia felt cold.

“You’re saying someone could replace Brandon?”

“Identical twins, isolated during childhood, trained to imitate one another.”

Rebecca looked disturbed.

“That belongs in a spy novel.”

“So does a false grave beneath a cemetery,” Olivia replied.

They reviewed photographs from Olivia’s marriage.

Subtle inconsistencies emerged.

Brandon had a small scar beneath his right ear. In several photographs, the scar was missing.

His handwriting changed slightly during two periods.

He developed an allergy to shellfish in the fourth year of marriage, despite eating it safely before.

There had been two Brandons.

Olivia remembered one particular week three years earlier.

Brandon returned from a consulting trip unusually quiet. He apologized for old arguments. He cooked dinner. He asked about her father and listened with genuine attention.

For nine days, Olivia believed their marriage had become what she once hoped.

Then he left for another trip.

When he returned, the cruelty resumed.

“Gabriel,” she whispered.

Perhaps the man she loved at times was not always Brandon.

The hostage video gained a more terrifying meaning.

They did not know which brother sat beneath the gun.

The black Hearthstone device activated.

CUSTODIAN 5 REQUESTS CONTACT.

A location appeared.

An abandoned theater in Brooklyn.

Against David’s advice, Olivia agreed to go.

She entered with security teams positioned outside and beneath the stage.

One light illuminated the center aisle.

A man sat alone in the front row.

From behind, he looked exactly like Brandon.

He stood.

The scar beneath his ear was absent.

“Gabriel,” Olivia said.

He looked at her with familiar eyes and unfamiliar sadness.

“My name is Daniel now.”

“Were you the man in the hostage video?”

“No.”

“Then Brandon is alive.”

“As of six hours ago.”

“Where?”

“On a train moving through France under diplomatic cargo protection.”

“Toward Switzerland?”

“Yes.”

Olivia remained near the aisle.

“Did you live with me?”

“For eleven days during the fourth year of your marriage.”

“Nine.”

He gave a faint smile.

“You noticed the difference sooner than Margaret expected.”

“Why were you there?”

“To copy your biometric patterns.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I was raised inside Roland’s system. Tutors taught me finance, languages, surveillance, and your family history. By fourteen, I knew what books you read. By eighteen, I knew the names of your childhood friends. By twenty-five, I knew the security architecture of your company.”

“You were trained to become my husband.”

“I was trained to become whatever role unlocked Hearthstone.”

“Did Brandon know?”

“Not until your wedding.”

Olivia thought of the recording in Margaret’s bedroom.

Brandon saying he loved her.

Margaret saying he was raised for this.

“Which one of you married me?”

“Brandon.”

“Why replace him later?”

“He rebelled. Roland wanted proof I could assume the role if necessary.”

Olivia’s voice hardened.

“You slept in my bed.”

“I slept in the guest room and told you I was ill.”

“You kissed me.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Once.”

She remembered the kiss in the kitchen.

Gentle.

Apologetic.

Nothing like Brandon’s impatient affection.

The memory now felt stolen.

“Why contact me?”

“Because Roland intends to use Brandon’s face to open Zurich.”

“The bank requires my biometric confirmation.”

“And the answer to a question.”

“What question?”

“Who owns the first debt?”

Olivia waited.

Daniel removed a photograph from his coat.

It showed Caroline, Roland, Jonathan, Elena, and a fifth person standing outside Northstar’s first office.

Victor Langford.

“Your parents borrowed their original capital from Roland,” Daniel said. “The first debt belongs to him.”

“Then why would the bank release the account to me?”

“Because the account contains the payment Jonathan prepared.”

“Forty million dollars?”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward the dark stage.

“Northstar Meridian.”

Before Olivia could respond, a red laser appeared on Daniel’s chest.

She shouted.

A shot cracked through the theater.

Daniel fell between the seats.

Security teams surged inside.

The shooter escaped through a tunnel beneath the stage.

Olivia knelt beside Daniel.

Blood darkened his shirt.

He grabbed her wrist.

“Brandon knows the truth about Caroline.”

“What truth?”

Daniel’s breath became ragged.

“She didn’t disappear to protect you.”

“Then why?”

“To keep Jonathan from discovering which daughter survived the car.”

Olivia stared at him.

“What daughter?”

May you like

Daniel’s grip weakened.

“You had a sister.”
