Chapter 6 - The Morning After
By sunrise, news vehicles had gathered outside the estate.
Vale Meridian’s chief executive officer had been arrested after an incident at his home. The company had frozen executive accounts. Federal investigators had entered its New York headquarters.
Reporters invented stories before they knew the facts.
Some claimed Eleanor had discovered a billion-dollar conspiracy.
Others said a marital dispute had triggered a corporate collapse.
The board scheduled an emergency meeting for ten o’clock.
Eleanor attended by video from a private hospital room after receiving stitches for the cut near her temple.
Daniel chaired the meeting.
Twelve directors appeared on the screen. Several looked frightened. Two had received payments from companies connected to Harrison.
They avoided Eleanor’s eyes.
Daniel began with a review of the evidence.
The fraudulent network involved at least forty-three million dollars in unauthorized transfers. Draft documents showed an organized effort to remove Eleanor and gain control of her patents. Security footage confirmed Harrison had physically confronted her after she discovered him with Chloe.
When Daniel finished, a director named Samuel Grant cleared his throat.
“Before we reach conclusions, we should consider the reputational damage caused by activating an emergency shutdown.”
Eleanor studied him.
“Are you concerned about the company’s reputation or your consulting payments from Northstar Advisory?”
Samuel’s face stiffened.
“I don’t know what you’re implying.”
“Phase two identified you as the approving director for four shell vendors.”
“That is confidential board information.”
“Not anymore.”
Daniel interrupted.
“Samuel, your access has been suspended pending investigation.”
Samuel disconnected from the meeting.
Another director spoke.
“Harrison assured us Eleanor was suffering from severe stress. He said temporary leadership changes were necessary.”
“Did you speak to me?” Eleanor asked.
“No.”
“Did you request an independent medical assessment?”
“No.”
“Then you were not concerned about my health. You were helping him remove me.”
No one answered.
The board voted to terminate Harrison for cause.
The decision was unanimous among the directors still permitted to vote.
They then asked Eleanor to return as interim chief executive officer.
She refused.
Daniel looked surprised.
“The company needs you.”
“The company needs honest leadership, not another concentration of power.”
“What are you proposing?”
“An independent restructuring committee. Full cooperation with investigators. Employee protection for anyone who reports misconduct. And separation between the founder’s technical authority and executive management.”
“Who leads during the transition?”
“You do.”
Daniel leaned back.
“I’m not sure I want that responsibility.”
“Neither was I when I began building this company.”
After the meeting, Eleanor’s attorney, Naomi Price, entered the hospital room carrying a folder.
“Harrison has requested release,” Naomi said. “His attorneys are presenting the incident as an argument between spouses.”
“The video?”
“Clear enough to challenge his version.”
“What about the fraud?”
“That will take longer. Financial cases move slowly.”
Eleanor looked through the window at snow covering the hospital grounds.
“How much can we prove?”
“More than he expects. Less than we ultimately need.”
“And Chloe?”
“She has requested an immunity agreement.”
Eleanor turned.
“Already?”
“She claims Harrison manipulated her and says she can identify the offshore accounts.”
“Do you believe her?”
“I believe she wants to avoid prison.”
Naomi placed another document on the table.
“Harrison also filed an emergency request preventing you from selling or transferring marital assets.”
Eleanor almost smiled.
“He thinks Protocol Icarus moved money.”
“He does.”
“It didn’t.”
“I know.”
“The protocol preserves evidence. It does not transfer ownership.”
“Harrison’s lawyers may discover that eventually.”
Eleanor looked at the document again.
“Let them search.”
Naomi raised an eyebrow.
“You sound almost pleased.”
“For nine years, Harrison benefited from the fact that people underestimated me.”
