Chapter 5 - Protocol Icarus

Harrison did not understand what Eleanor was doing until the red command screen appeared.

“What is that?” Chloe asked.

Eleanor unlocked the application with her fingerprint and facial scan.

Harrison laughed.

“You’re calling your lawyer?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Everyone.”

Her thumb hovered above the command button.

For the first time, Harrison looked uncertain.

“Eleanor, put the phone down.”

“You have nothing without me,” he added when she did not respond.

That sentence carried the weight of every stolen interview, every forged authorization, and every meeting in which he had treated her intelligence as a resource he owned.

Eleanor met his eyes.

“I built everything you think you own.”

She pressed the button.

Protocol Icarus activated in less than a second.

The confirmation tone sounded.

Across the world, Vale Meridian’s systems began isolating executive credentials linked to suspicious activity. Servers created permanent copies of financial records. Board members received emergency messages. Independent counsel obtained evidence packages containing contracts, access logs, and recorded approvals.

Harrison’s phone rang first.

Then Chloe’s.

Then the laptop erupted with alerts.

“What did you do?” Harrison demanded.

“Protected my company.”

“You have no authority to freeze executive accounts.”

“I have founder-level authority over intellectual property systems.”

“I’m the chief executive officer.”

“You’re also the subject of a fraud investigation.”

Chloe stared at Eleanor.

“You investigated us?”

“I investigated missing money. You placed yourselves in the evidence.”

Police sirens approached.

Harrison turned toward the security camera.

His face changed.

“The footage,” he whispered.

“The camera records continuously,” Eleanor said. “Including audio.”

Chloe moved away from him.

“You said the internal cameras were disabled.”

Harrison ignored her.

He stepped toward Eleanor again, but the officers entered before he reached her.

Marcus followed.

When Harrison was restrained, he continued insisting the entire situation was a marital misunderstanding.

Then Daniel called.

He confirmed the hidden transfers.

Forty million dollars had already been traced.

More records remained concealed behind offshore companies.

Eleanor authorized phase two.

Within minutes, investigators received the names of executives, accountants, and contractors who had accessed the fraudulent payment network.

One of those names belonged to Chloe Bennett.

When Chloe’s phone displayed the investigator’s call, she began crying.

“I can explain,” she told Eleanor.

“Not to me.”

“Please. Harrison said the money was being moved for a confidential acquisition.”

“You signed documents declaring me mentally unfit.”

Chloe looked down.

“He said you were losing control.”

“And you believed him?”

“I believed he loved me.”

Eleanor felt a final fragment of grief move through her.

“Love does not require you to destroy another person.”

Harrison laughed bitterly from beside the officers.

“Don’t listen to her, Chloe. She’ll sacrifice anyone to protect the company.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“No. You sacrificed everyone because you believed the company belonged to you.”

The officers led Harrison from the room.

Chloe remained behind while another investigator arrived to question her.

Eleanor walked downstairs with Marcus.

The estate felt unfamiliar, as if the walls themselves had absorbed the betrayal.

“You need medical attention,” Marcus said.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“I said I’m fine.”

He stopped near the staircase.

“Eleanor, you don’t have to prove anything right now.”

The kindness in his voice nearly broke the control she had maintained.

She sat on the bottom step.

For several minutes, she said nothing.

Then she covered her face and cried.

Not for the company.

Not for the money.

May you like

She cried for the woman she had been when she trusted Harrison and Chloe without fear.

She cried because that woman was gone.
