Chapter 9 - Robert Morgan's Last Night

Robert Morgan had supposedly died of a heart attack.
Claire remembered the funeral clearly.
Margaret wore black and never cried.
Daniel stood beside the coffin like a frightened boy.
The official story was simple.
Robert woke during the night with chest pain.
Margaret called emergency services.
He died before reaching the hospital.
Now Daniel told another version.
"My father wanted to leave her."
Claire sat slowly.
Daniel looked at Julian, then Claire.
"He found the debts. He found the accounts."
RM Holdings.
The same scheme.
"He told her he was filing for divorce."
"What happened?"
"They argued."
Daniel's hands shook.
"I was there."
Claire felt dread rising.
"My father had heart problems. Everyone knew that."
Daniel paused.
"Mom took his medication."
Claire stared.
"What?"
"Not all of it. She hid the bottle."
"Why?"
"To scare him."
Claire could barely comprehend the sentence.
"He started having chest pain during the argument."
Daniel's face crumpled.
"He asked for his tablets."
"What did your mother do?"
"She told him he could have them after he agreed not to leave."
Claire covered her mouth.
Julian said quietly, "Daniel, what happened next?"
"My father collapsed."
"And the medication?"
"Mom panicked."
"Did she call for help?"
Daniel looked down.
"Not immediately."
Claire whispered, "How long?"
"I don't know."
"How long?"
"Maybe ten minutes."
The room felt airless.
"What did you do?"
"I was frozen."
"You were thirty-three."
"I know."
"Did you tell paramedics?"
"No."
"Did you tell doctors?"
"No."
"Did you tell anyone?"
Daniel shook his head.
Claire understood something then.
Margaret did not simply control Daniel through emotional dependence.
She controlled him through shared guilt.
For years, Daniel had known something terrible about his mother's actions.
And Margaret knew he had helped conceal it.
Each protected the other.
Each became more dangerous because exposure threatened both.
Claire said, "You lied about your father's death."
Daniel whispered, "Yes."
"And Rebecca."
"Yes."
"And me."
"Yes."
Claire looked at the man she married.
"How many lives did you plan to sacrifice so your mother never faced consequences?"
Daniel began crying again.
This time Claire did not mistake tears for remorse.
Remorse required truth before capture.
Daniel offered truth only when he ran out of lies.
Julian asked whether any evidence remained from Robert's death.
Daniel mentioned an old home security system.
The cameras stored footage locally.
Margaret demanded the system be replaced after Robert died.
Daniel believed the hard drive had been discarded.
But Robert kept backups of important files in a fireproof cabinet at his office.
After his death, the office contents went into storage.
"Where?"
Daniel gave the facility name.
Claire's heart hammered.
"Who owns the unit?"
"Mom."
"Can she access it?"
"Yes."
Claire looked at Julian.
They both understood.
If Margaret realized Daniel had talked, whatever remained might disappear.
Daniel stared between them.
"She doesn't know I'm here."
Claire almost laughed.
"She always knows."
At that exact moment, Daniel's phone rang.
Margaret.
No one moved.
The phone stopped.
Then rang again.
Daniel stared.
Claire said, "Answer."
He hesitated.
Julian activated a recorder with Daniel's consent.
Daniel accepted the call.
"Mom."
Margaret did not greet him.
Her voice came through clearly.
"Where are you?"
Daniel glanced at Claire.
"Out."
"With her?"
Silence.
Margaret's tone changed.
"You stupid boy."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Mom."
"What did you tell her?"
"Nothing."
Margaret laughed.
"You always were terrible at lying to me."
Claire's skin prickled.
Margaret continued.
"If she goes near your father's storage unit, everything is over."
Julian and Claire exchanged a look.
Daniel whispered, "What is in there?"
Margaret became silent.
Then she said something that changed everything.
May you like
"Something your father made the night he died."
The call ended.
