Chapter 7 - What Claire Had Been Drinking

The medications became Claire's next question.
Julian advised caution.
Possession of prescription sedatives did not prove Daniel had drugged her.
The dates were suspicious.
The missing memories were concerning.
But suspicion was not evidence.
Claire needed more.
She remembered the vitamins.
Every morning Daniel placed three pills beside her coffee.
A multivitamin.
Vitamin D.
And a small white tablet he claimed was magnesium.
Claire had never checked.
Why would she?
Daniel was her husband.
The bottle remained at the house.
Going back alone was impossible.
But Claire still owned half the property.
Julian arranged for her to retrieve personal belongings while Daniel was at work.
A neutral third party accompanied her.
Margaret was not supposed to be there.
She was.
When Claire entered, Margaret stood in the kitchen.
"You brought a witness."
Claire ignored her.
She moved through the house collecting clothing, documents, jewelry, and her laptop.
Margaret followed.
"You are humiliating Daniel."
Claire continued packing.
"He hasn't slept."
Claire zipped a suitcase.
"Neither have I."
"He loves you."
Claire finally turned.
"Then why am I afraid of what he put in my vitamins?"
Margaret's expression flickered.
It was enough.
Claire entered the kitchen.
The pill organizer was gone.
So were the bottles.
She opened cabinets.
Nothing.
Margaret leaned against the doorway.
"Looking for something?"
Claire turned.
"You removed them."
"I clean my house."
"It is my house too."
"Not for long."
Claire froze.
Margaret realized her mistake.
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing."
Claire stepped closer.
Margaret smiled coldly.
"You always wanted to be important, Claire. That is your problem."
"My problem is that you pushed me down stairs."
"You survived."
The words landed like ice.
The neutral observer looked sharply at Margaret.
Margaret immediately added, "I mean your injuries were not life-threatening."
Claire said nothing.
She left with the suitcase.
At the car, she noticed something inside the side pocket.
A small orange prescription bottle.
Claire had not put it there.
The label had been partially torn off.
Inside were several small white tablets.
She stared.
The observer said, "Was that yours?"
"No."
Claire did not touch the tablets directly.
She called Julian.
The pills were turned over for testing.
The results arrived four days later.
The tablets were the same sedative prescribed to Daniel.
Claire's blood from the hospital had not been tested for it because no one suspected drugging at the time.
But Dr. Cole had preserved routine samples.
With Claire's consent, the hospital ran an additional toxicology analysis.
The call came at 7:15 the following morning.
Dr. Cole himself spoke.
"Claire, the sample showed a sedative metabolite."
Claire sat very still.
"But I hadn't taken anything."
"That is why I am calling."
"How long would it stay in my system?"
"It depends on dose and timing."
"The fall happened around six."
"Then exposure could have occurred earlier that day."
Claire remembered breakfast.
Daniel had placed the vitamins beside her coffee.
She had taken them automatically.
Her hands started shaking.
"I wasn't dizzy before the fall."
"Lower doses can still affect reaction time."
Claire closed her eyes.
Margaret's push.
Her foot missing the step.
Her hand failing to reach the railing.
Had the medication made the fall worse?
"Claire?"
"I'm here."
"I strongly recommend you share this information with your attorney and advocate."
"I will."
After the call, Claire sat alone for twenty minutes.
Then she remembered something.
The casserole.
She had cooked it that afternoon.
Daniel came home early.
He offered her tea.
She drank half.
Later she felt tired.
She blamed work.
Another memory surfaced.
Before the garage fall, Daniel brought lemonade outside.
Before the bathroom fall, wine.
Before the kitchen injury, herbal tea.
A pattern.
Not proof of every event.
But enough to make Claire stop asking whether she was imagining things.
At noon, Daniel sent a message.
I know you found the pills.
Claire stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
You do not understand why they were there.
Then:
Please meet me without lawyers.
Claire almost deleted it.
Instead, she forwarded it to Julian.
Twenty minutes later Daniel sent one final message.
Mom is the one you should be afraid of.
Claire read it twice.
Then a second meaning occurred to her.
May you like
Daniel was not warning her.
He was choosing his defense.
