Chapter 5 - The Man With Kline's Hand

The elevator descended below the basement level even though the control panel showed no floor beneath B.

Daniel felt the machinery slow. The doors opened onto a narrow concrete corridor lit by red emergency bulbs. Pipes ran overhead. Dust lay undisturbed except for a recent trail of wet shoeprints.

Kline had told him to come alone. Daniel had obeyed only in appearance. He had left Voss a timed message and carried a compact camera clipped beneath his collar. His old pistol rested at the small of his back.

The corridor ended at a steel door secured by a biometric reader.

Someone had pressed a severed left hand against it.

Blood streaked the scanner.

The door stood open.

Daniel entered a room that should not have existed beneath a county hospital. Six medical chairs faced a wall of dark monitors. Each chair had restraints at the wrists, ankles, and forehead. Cabinets contained syringes labeled with numerical codes. A Meridian Neurotech emblem had been painted over but remained visible under peeling gray paint.

On the center monitor, a live video showed Lily's ICU room.

Daniel drew his weapon.

"You always led with the muzzle," a voice said behind him.

Daniel turned.

Captain Elias Rourke stood in the doorway.

He was older, gray at the temples, a deep burn scar pulling one side of his neck. His right leg remained stiff. In his gloved left hand, he carried a small insulated case.

"You were supposed to be dead," Daniel said.

Rourke gave a tired smile. "So were you."

Daniel aimed at his chest. "Did you hurt Lily?"

"No."

"Did Halcyon?"

"Halcyon is a name painted over ten other names. Men like to believe organizations commit crimes. It makes the criminals harder to see."

"Answer me."

"A retrieval team took her. The beating was not authorized. One of them lost control when Lily would not reveal what she knew."

Daniel moved closer. "Names."

"I can give you names or I can keep your daughter alive. You have time for one."

Rourke set the insulated case on a table and opened it. Inside lay Kline's severed hand.

Daniel's finger tightened on the trigger.

"Kline was dying before I reached him," Rourke said. "The retrieval team poisoned him. He cut off his own hand and sent me a location code through an old Raven channel. I used it to access this room."

"Why?"

"Because the hospital has been part of Sanctuary since before Lily was born. This room records biometric reactions. Every surgeon, administrator, and officer who entered tonight has been measured."

Rourke touched a keyboard. The monitors lit with profiles. Daniel saw his own face, Voss's, Kline's, Lily's, and dozens of hospital employees. Beside each profile were stress readings, pupil responses, voice patterns, and loyalty estimates.

"They are looking for the second authorization shard," Rourke said. "Anna divided the Sanctuary key. One half is inside Lily. The other is encoded in the nervous system of a surviving Raven soldier."

Daniel felt a cold pressure behind his eyes. "Which soldier?"

Rourke looked at him.

"You."

A memory surfaced without warning: waking after the Raven attack in a white room, unable to move, Anna's voice telling someone that the sequence had failed. Daniel had believed it was a morphine dream.

Rourke continued. "The scars on your back are not all shrapnel."

Daniel remembered the thin line beneath his right shoulder blade, too straight for battlefield metal.

"Anna used us," he said.

"She protected the archive. Maybe she protected us too."

An alarm flashed on the live ICU screen. A respiratory therapist entered Lily's room pushing a medication cart.

Rourke froze the image and enlarged the person's badge.

The photograph belonged to a woman. The person wearing it had broad shoulders and a right-leg limp.

"That is not hospital staff," Daniel said.

"No," Rourke replied. "That is one of mine."

The figure reached for Lily's IV line.

Daniel ran.

The underground door slammed shut behind him.

On the monitor, Lily opened her eyes.

May you like

She looked directly at the hidden camera and mouthed two words.

DAD, RUN.
