Chapter 10 - The Detective With Two Faces

They found a trail of blood leading through the clinic's rear passage, but it ended at a locked iron gate. Beyond the gate, old catacombs spread beneath the city.
Daniel wanted to follow immediately. Nia stopped him.
"Lily is crashing again."
The implant beneath Lily's jaw pulsed with faint heat. Her heart rate climbed while her body remained rigid. Nia placed sound-dampening pads over Lily's ears and darkened the room.
"Someone is transmitting a trigger pattern," she said. "Not enough to control her. Enough to force the shard to identify itself."
Daniel held Lily's hand. "Fight it."
Her eyes found his. For several seconds, she seemed trapped behind them. Then her fingers moved against his palm.
A rhythm.
Not Morse code this time. The lullaby Anna used to play.
Daniel hummed the melody. Lily's breathing slowed. The implant cooled.
Nia stared at them. "Anna built a counter-pattern into her memory. Emotional recall disrupts the command sequence."
"She used Lily's childhood as a firewall," Rourke said.
Daniel felt both gratitude and rage. Anna had protected their daughter by turning love into code, yet she had burdened Lily with a war before Lily knew there was one.
Father Gabriel returned from the catacombs with a strip of Voss's coat caught on a nail. "Two sets of footprints. One dragged the other."
Rourke checked his ammunition. "Bennett took her."
"Or the woman wearing her face did," Daniel said.
Nia recovered one more file from Lily's phone. It was a voice memo recorded during the attack. Two women argued in the warehouse.
One voice belonged to Voss.
The other also belonged to Voss.
The first shouted, "You were supposed to scare her, not break her."
The second replied, "Bennett said pain opens memory."
Then a man ordered them both to leave.
Rourke listened twice. "Halcyon created duplicates. Not clones. Operatives reconstructed through surgery, behavioral conditioning, and voice training. Sanctuary called them Mirrors."
Voss's brother had designed adaptive identity models at Meridian. Bennett could have used his work to build a duplicate of Voss, or perhaps the woman Daniel knew as Voss was the duplicate.
Daniel refused to let suspicion become paralysis.
They entered the catacombs. Stone corridors ran beneath old burial vaults. Fresh cables followed the walls, leading to surveillance nodes hidden among the bones.
At a junction, they found Voss tied to a chair, blood on her temple. She was conscious.
"Do not come closer," she warned.
A second Voss stepped from behind a column holding a pistol to the first woman's head.
The resemblance was exact until Daniel saw the eyes. The second woman's gaze was too still, trained to imitate emotion rather than feel it.
"Which one is real?" Rourke asked.
The armed woman smiled. "Real is a legal term, Captain."
The bound woman shouted, "Ask about Julian's red bicycle."
The armed woman answered first. "He broke the front wheel riding down Mason Hill when he was twelve. Mara carried him home."
The bound woman went pale. "That memory was never written down."
"Sanctuary does not require writing," the Mirror said. "It requires extraction."
She turned the pistol toward Daniel. "Sergeant Mercer, Bennett wants to trade. Lily for Anna."
"Where?"
"Bellweather Mill at dawn. Bring the command index in your body. Bring Captain Rourke. Come without police."
"And if I refuse?"
The Mirror fired.
Rourke shoved Daniel aside. The bullet struck the stone behind them.
During the confusion, the bound Voss snapped one wrist free and drove the chair backward into her double. Both women fell into darkness beyond a broken railing.
Daniel reached the edge.
One Voss clung to a cable over a deep shaft.
The other disappeared below.
Daniel grabbed the survivor's hand and pulled her up.

She looked at him, breathless.
"You chose the wrong one," she whispered.
