Chapter 6 - DANIEL'S CONFESSION

The file resumed after twelve seconds.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“I need you to understand something before you decide whether you hate me.”
Claire whispered, “Too late.”
Emma squeezed her hand.
Daniel continued.
“My name is Daniel Whitmore. But Whitmore was not the name I was born with.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“My original name was Daniel Mercer.”
Emma frowned.
Claire knew the name.
Mercer Logistics.
One of Daniel’s former employers.
A company supposedly dissolved before Claire met him.
Daniel spoke slowly.
“My father, Thomas Mercer, founded a private intelligence contracting network in 1998. Publicly, the company handled logistics. Privately, it moved people, money, information, and technology for governments that wanted deniability.”
Images flashed across the video.
Warehouses.
Cargo aircraft.
Bank records.
Photographs of men Claire didn’t recognize.
“I joined the company at twenty-two. I believed we were protecting people. I was wrong.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Every business trip.
Every unexplained absence.
Every password Daniel had refused to share.
“I spent years trying to leave. When Emma was born, I thought I had. But my father’s network had grown into something else.”
A symbol appeared on the screen.
A black circle cut by three vertical lines.
Emma whispered, “I’ve seen that.”
Claire turned.
“Where?”
Emma hesitated.
“Dad had it on a notebook.”
Daniel continued.
“The network called itself Northstar.”
Lieutenant Ramirez quietly locked the interview room door.
“Northstar specialized in identity reconstruction. Witnesses. Operatives. Assets. Sometimes criminals.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Sometimes children.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“They created new identities from real people who died young. Birth certificates. Medical histories. School records. Entire lives.”
The video changed.
A list of names appeared.
Some marked deceased.
Others active.
Then Daniel’s own photograph.
DANIEL MERCER.
Status: deceased.
DANIEL WHITMORE.
Status: active.
Claire felt sick.
“I became Daniel Whitmore because my father needed Mercer to disappear.”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“Years later, I learned Northstar was preparing something called Continuity.”
The screen showed documents filled with medical codes.
Claire leaned closer.
“What is that?”
Daniel answered as though he had heard her.
“Continuity was supposed to preserve bloodlines, leverage, and access.”
Ramirez whispered, “Jesus.”
“Children born to specific families were catalogued because they could later be used to claim trusts, inheritances, security clearances, corporate control, or political legitimacy.”
Claire looked down at Oliver.
Daniel’s voice changed.
“And then I found my own family in the database.”
Emma began crying silently.
“Emma was listed first.”
Claire wrapped an arm around her.
“Then Claire became pregnant again.”
Claire stopped moving.
They had not planned Oliver.
She had discovered the pregnancy eleven days before Daniel’s accident.
She had told Daniel the same night.
He had cried.
Held her.
Said they were lucky.
Two days later, he left for what he called a client meeting.
Five days later, his car went off the mountain.
Daniel spoke again.
“When I learned about the baby, I checked the Continuity index.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“The unborn child already had a file.”
Claire felt physically ill.
“That meant someone inside Northstar knew Claire was pregnant before I did.”
Ramirez stared at Oliver.
Daniel leaned closer.
“If the baby is a boy, Hale will try to take him.”
Claire whispered, “Why?”
The video distorted.
Audio crackled.
Then Daniel said four words.
“Because Oliver isn’t mine.”
Emma screamed.
Claire’s entire body went numb.

The video froze.
Then ended.
