Chapter 5 - THE ENVELOPE

Claire refused to leave with Victor Hale.

That decision changed everything.

Pike argued.

The airline’s legal representative argued.

Airport police arrived.

Passengers continued recording.

The public nature of the confrontation made it difficult for anyone to force Claire quietly into a vehicle.

Eventually, an airport police lieutenant named Sofia Ramirez intervened.

“Mrs. Whitmore and her children will be taken into the terminal interview suite under airport police supervision until jurisdiction is established.”

Victor Hale objected.

Ramirez didn’t care.

“This is my airport.”

Claire liked her immediately.

Margaret was taken separately.

The mysterious gray envelope traveled with Claire in a transparent evidence bag.

At 2:17 p.m., Claire sat in a secure interview room with Emma sleeping against her shoulder and Oliver feeding beneath a nursing cover.

Lieutenant Ramirez sat opposite her.

Pike stood near the door.

Hale had disappeared.

Claire noticed.

“Where did he go?”

Pike frowned.

“Who?”

“Victor Hale.”

“You don’t need to worry about him.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Pike ignored it.

Ramirez placed the envelope on the table.

“Mrs. Whitmore, the name on this makes it potentially yours.”

“Potentially?”

“We need to establish whether opening it could compromise an investigation.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Someone hid it beneath a woman on an airplane. I think the investigation is already compromised.”

Ramirez glanced at Pike.

He reluctantly nodded.

The evidence tape was photographed.

Then cut.

Inside was a memory card.

A brass key.

And a folded sheet of paper.

Claire recognized Daniel’s handwriting before she touched it.

Her hands began shaking.

Emma woke.

“Mom?”

Claire unfolded the note.

Claire,

If you are reading this, the official story about my death has already failed.

Do not trust anyone who tells you they worked directly with me unless they can answer one question:

What did Emma name the fox?

Claire stared at the sentence.

Emma leaned over.

“What fox?”

Claire knew.

When Emma was five, Daniel had taken her camping.

A red fox had appeared near their campsite.

Emma named it Frederick Pancake Whitmore.

No one outside their family knew.

Claire continued reading.

I am sorry for what I did to you.

I am more sorry for what I failed to tell you.

The key opens a box in Washington.

The memory card explains why.

If Collins has reached you, listen before judging her.

Do not let Hale near Oliver.

Claire stopped breathing.

Pike stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

Claire folded the paper.

“It’s personal.”

“Mrs. Whitmore—”

Ramirez held up a hand.

“It is addressed to her.”

Pike’s jaw tightened.

Claire looked at him.

“What did Emma name the fox?”

Pike blinked.

“What?”

“My husband apparently had a question for people claiming to work with him. Answer it.”

Pike stared.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Claire slowly stood.

“Then Daniel told me not to trust you.”

Pike’s face changed.

Ramirez moved between them.

“Agent Pike?”

Pike touched his earpiece.

Then abruptly left the room.

Claire watched the door close.

Ramirez whispered, “That was interesting.”

Emma spoke.

“Frederick Pancake Whitmore.”

Ramirez looked at her.

Emma shrugged.

“I was five.”

Claire almost smiled.

Then Oliver began to fuss.

Emma reached toward the memory card.

“Can we see what’s on it?”

Ramirez hesitated.

Claire picked it up.

“If Daniel left this for me, yes.”

An airport forensic laptop was brought in.

The card contained only one video file.

No title.

No metadata.

Ramirez disconnected the laptop from all external networks.

Claire clicked play.

Daniel appeared on screen.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

The date stamp showed three weeks after his funeral.

Emma screamed.

“Dad!”

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel looked exhausted.

Bruised.

But unmistakably alive.

He stared directly into the camera.

May you like

“Claire, if you’re seeing this, then they found Oliver.”

The video cut to black.
