Chapter 14 - Beneath Caroline’s Name

North Shore Chapel stood on a cliff overlooking the sea.
Caroline’s memorial plaque was fixed to the eastern wall, beside a narrow garden of white roses.
Bryce had visited every year on the anniversary of her death.
He had never known the plaque could be opened.
Mara discovered scratches around two screws.
Someone had removed it recently.
Behind the plaque was a shallow compartment.
It was empty except for a strip of black fabric and a small digital recorder.
Noah recognized the fabric.
“It came from Grandma’s coat.”
Bryce looked toward Mara.
“Judith was here.”
“Or someone wants us to believe she was.”
Tessa activated the recorder.
Caroline’s voice began immediately.
If Mother brought you here, she finally told part of the truth.
Noah moved closer.
Bellwether was created by my father, Richard Vale, and his business partner, Evelyn Mercer.
Tessa exchanged a glance with Bryce.
Evelyn Mercer had founded Mercer International, the company negotiating to merge with Vale Meridian in Singapore.
The merger had nearly kept Bryce out of the country long enough for Tessa to disappear.
Caroline continued.
Evelyn discovered that a person did not need to die physically for their assets to become available. They only needed to die administratively. She built relationships with doctors, lawyers, clerks and bankers who could erase someone from the systems that protected them.
Richard tried to close Bellwether after he learned what she was doing.
His plane disappeared before he could expose her.
Mother knew more than she admitted. She helped me investigate, but fear changed her. She began serving the system she once wanted to destroy.
There was a pause on the recording.
The ownership agreement is not here. I gave it to the only person Evelyn could never investigate without exposing herself.
The recording stopped.
No name followed.
Noah checked the device.
“That can’t be all.”
A second file appeared after he connected the recorder to his phone.
The recording date was six months after Caroline’s death.
A man’s voice spoke.
Bryce recognized it instantly.
Richard Vale.
Caroline is gone. Judith has surrendered. Bryce still believes the plane accident was real.
Bryce gripped the stone wall.
Richard continued.
Evelyn thinks I’m dead. For now, that is the only advantage we have.
Tessa stared at the recorder.
Richard had survived.
He had remained hidden while Caroline died and Bryce lived for fifteen years believing he had lost them both.
The message continued.
If Bryce hears this, then Bellwether has become active against the family again. Do not look for me. Find the person Caroline trusted with the agreement.
The recording ended with the sound of a church bell.
Mara examined the file information.
“It was transferred to this device four days ago.”
“Someone put it here after Judith disappeared,” Tessa said.
Noah looked toward the sea.
“Richard?”
“Or Evelyn,” Bryce replied.
Ruiz called from the chapel entrance.
“Someone needs to see this.”
Inside, the investigators had discovered a hidden camera aimed directly at Caroline’s plaque.
The footage had been stored remotely, but the last frame remained in the local memory.
It showed a woman standing before the plaque two nights earlier.
She wore a dark veil and carried a silver case.
Her face was partly hidden.
Tessa recognized her posture.
At the Singapore negotiations, Bryce had sent photographs of the Mercer International delegation.
The woman was Evelyn Mercer.
Before removing the plaque, Evelyn had looked directly into the hidden camera.
She held up a handwritten note.
Mara enlarged the image.
The note contained one sentence.
TESSA ALREADY HAS THE AGREEMENT.
Everyone turned toward her.
“I have never seen it,” Tessa said.
Noah suddenly opened his backpack.
Caroline’s wooden bird was inside.
So was the bird he had made for Tessa.
He placed them side by side.
“They aren’t exactly the same,” he said.
The original bird’s raised wing opened a hidden compartment.
The newer bird’s opposite wing moved too.
Tessa had never tested it.
Noah pressed the second latch.
A thin metal tube slid from the wooden base.
Inside was a tightly rolled document bearing the signatures of Richard Vale and Evelyn Mercer.
The original Bellwether ownership agreement.
At the bottom, Caroline had added a handwritten transfer clause.

Upon my death or disappearance, all controlling rights shall pass to the bearer chosen by me.
Beneath the sentence was Tessa’s full name.
