Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Reckoning

Vale Meridian’s emergency board meeting began at nine on Monday morning.

At nine fifteen, Tessa walked through the doors.

Half the directors stood.

The others remained frozen in their seats.

Three weeks earlier, they had voted to remove her from every company system based on documents supplied by Bellwether. None had contacted her personally.

The acting chairman, Martin Keller, cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Vale, we are pleased to see that reports of your death were inaccurate.”

Tessa took the empty chair beside Bryce.

“That may be the weakest apology I have ever received.”

Keller glanced at the directors.

“We relied on verified government records.”

“You relied on convenient records.”

“The company had a fiduciary obligation to continue operating.”

“You transferred my voting shares within forty-eight hours.”

“The transfer was authorized by your estate representative.”

“My estate representative was the man forging my husband’s signature.”

Keller opened a folder.

“All Bellwether transactions have been reversed.”

“Not all.”

Tessa connected her laptop to the conference-room display.

A series of transfers appeared on the screen.

Over eleven years, Vale Meridian had paid more than $26 million to consulting companies linked to Bellwether.

Some payments had been authorized by Judith.

Others carried Keller’s approval.

The chairman’s face tightened.

“These were legitimate risk-management fees.”

“What risk did Bellwether manage?” Tessa asked. “The risk that company owners would remain alive?”

No one answered.

Mara entered the boardroom with Detective Ruiz and two financial investigators.

Keller stood.

“This is a private meeting.”

Ruiz presented a warrant.

“Not anymore.”

The investigators seized company servers and froze six accounts.

One director attempted to leave.

Noah, watching through the glass wall from the executive lobby, saw security stop him.

Tessa continued her presentation.

“Bellwether used fraudulent deaths, medical incapacity claims and family disputes to move assets into controlled trusts. Caroline was not the only person targeted.”

She displayed a list of names from the ledger.

Four were former Vale Meridian shareholders.

Two had died unexpectedly.

One had been declared mentally incapable.

Another had disappeared after selling his shares for a fraction of their value.

Keller looked at Bryce.

“You cannot allow her to destroy the company over family accusations.”

Bryce rose.

“She saved this company eight years ago.”

He placed his access card on the table.

“And today she is saving it from us.”

The board voted to remove Keller.

Tessa was appointed interim chairwoman until the investigation concluded.

Her first action was to restore every employee terminated under Bellwether’s restructuring plan.

Her second was to establish an independent fund for the families of those whose assets had been taken.

Her third was to freeze every account connected to Judith, Crane, Morrow and R.V. Holdings.

The final account resisted the freeze.

The bank reported that its controlling owner had changed two hours earlier.

New owner: Richard Vale.

Bryce read the notice.

“That’s impossible.”

Tessa remembered the man on the train.

“Not anymore.”

At the end of the meeting, Ruiz received an urgent call.

Leonard Crane had been found at a private airfield using a false passport.

He had requested protection in exchange for testimony.

Mara and Ruiz left immediately.

Tessa, Bryce and Noah joined them at the federal interview center that evening.

Crane sat behind reinforced glass.

He looked older than he had in the Vale kitchen.

“Judith will blame me for everything,” he said.

“Did you forge the certificates?” Ruiz asked.

“I processed documents I believed were authorized.”

Tessa leaned toward the microphone.

“You created a passport using my photograph.”

“No. Morrow handled replacement identities.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who controls Bellwether?”

Crane looked toward the observation camera.

“I never met him directly.”

“Him?” Bryce asked.

Crane swallowed.

“Richard.”

Bryce gripped the table.

“My father is alive?”

Crane closed his eyes.

“Richard Vale died fifteen years ago.”

“Then who have you been working for?”

May you like

Crane looked directly at him.

“A man who has his face, his voice and every secret your father ever knew.”
