Chapter 2 - An Invitation With a Price

Richard returned to the café several times.
At first, Emily assumed he had business nearby. Then he began requesting her section, asking personal questions, and leaving unusually large tips.
He told her he admired hardworking people.
Emily knew he admired control.
One evening, Richard invited her to a charity dinner at the Mercer Waterfront Club. He claimed the event supported scholarships for hospitality workers.
Emily accepted because the club belonged to Mercer Holdings and was included in her investigation.
She arrived in a simple dark-blue dress. Victoria noticed her immediately.
“What is she doing here?” Victoria asked.
Richard smiled.
“She’s my guest. I thought she might enjoy seeing how the other half lives.”
Emily understood. She had not been invited as an equal. She had been brought as entertainment.
Throughout dinner, Victoria asked Emily questions designed to embarrass her.
Did she own a home?
No.
Had she attended an elite university?
Emily said only that she had studied business.
Did she know which fork to use?
Emily calmly selected the correct one.
Victoria’s smile became thinner with every answer.
Later, Emily overheard Richard speaking to an investor near the balcony.
“The Mercer family has lost control,” Richard said. “Victoria only understands spending. Once we marry, I’ll manage her shares.”
“And the hidden chairman?” the investor asked.
“A myth created by the old man. No one has ever seen her.”
Emily remained behind the curtain until they walked away.
That night, she sent a message to her lawyer, Natalie Brooks.
