Chapter 12 - Daniel's Confession

Emma finally saw Daniel six days after Facility Seven burned.

Not because Nathan Hale allowed it.

Because Daniel escaped.

At eleven forty-two at night, Emma's backyard motion light activated.

She checked the camera.

A man stood beneath the maple tree.

Thin.

Bearded.

Wearing hospital clothing beneath a stolen coat.

Emma opened the door.

Daniel looked at her.

Neither moved.

Nine years.

Thousands of imagined conversations.

None survived the moment.

Daniel spoke first.

"Hi."

Emma almost laughed.

Instead she slapped him.

The sound cracked through the kitchen.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I deserved that."

"That's not enough."

"I know."

She hit him again.

He did not move.

Emma's hands began shaking.

"You were alive."

"I know."

"You were alive."

"Emma."

"You let your daughter bury an empty coffin!"

His face collapsed.

"I know."

"She wrote you letters!"

Daniel looked away.

"Every birthday. Every Christmas. Every Father's Day."

Tears filled his eyes.

Emma hated that part of herself that noticed.

"You don't get to cry."

"I know."

"Stop saying that!"

Daniel flinched.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Emma stepped backward.

"Start talking."

Daniel entered.

She did not hug him.

She did not offer food.

She placed a chair across the kitchen table.

Daniel sat.

"Voss recruited me in 2016."

"I know."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Thomas."

"Yes."

"Is he alive?"

"We don't know."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Then Hale has him."

"Maybe."

Daniel shook his head.

"If Hale had him, we'd know."

Emma studied him.

"You sound like one of them."

"I was."

"Voluntarily?"

Daniel looked at her.

"For a while."

The admission hurt more than the possibility.

"Why?"

"Because when Warren discovered I was cooperating, Voss gave me a choice. Disappear or watch Dad destroy you and Lily."

"So you disappeared."

"At first."

"You could have contacted me."

"No."

"You could've warned me."

"No."

"You don't get to decide what I could survive."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"I watched you clear buildings with a broken hand. I knew exactly what you could survive."

"Then why?"

"Because Voss had people around you."

Emma went still.

"Who?"

"I never knew all of them."

"Try."

"Police. Military contacts. Financial institutions."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"He had somebody in your old command."

Emma thought of Hale's comment.

You haven't changed.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Then what happened?"

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I worked for Red Cedar."

"Doing what?"

"Financial analysis. Tracking money."

"For Voss?"

"Yes."

"Did you know he was corrupt?"

"Not immediately."

"When did you know?"

"2018."

"And you stayed."

Daniel looked at her.

"I had to."

"Why?"

"Because by then Red Cedar had files on hundreds of people. Judges. cops. contractors. soldiers."

"Blackmail?"

"Insurance."

Emma laughed without humor.

"You learned Warren's vocabulary."

Daniel winced.

"Probably."

"What was your role?"

"I found the money. Hale moved people. Voss controlled leverage."

"People like Thomas?"

Daniel looked down.

"Yes."

Emma's voice became quiet.

"Did you help imprison him?"

"No."

"Did you know?"

"Later."

"And you stayed."

Daniel slammed his palm on the table.

"You think I could walk out?"

Emma did not move.

Daniel immediately regretted the outburst.

He lowered his voice.

"Every time I tried, someone near you got photographed."

He looked toward the stairs.

"Lily at school. You grocery shopping. Sarah at work."

Emma understood.

Threat by proximity.

Daniel continued.

"Then something changed last year."

"What?"

"Voss got sick."

Emma frowned.

"He isn't dead."

"No."

"What happened?"

"Pancreatic cancer."

"So the empire needs a successor."

Daniel looked at her.

"Exactly."

"Hale?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Daniel remained silent.

Emma leaned closer.

"Who?"

"You."

She stared.

Daniel's words seemed absurd.

Then frightening.

"Explain."

"Voss always respected you."

"He used me."

"Both can be true."

"No."

Daniel continued.

"He told me you had the qualities Red Cedar needed. Discipline. Credibility. Operational experience."

Emma laughed.

"I'm not joining a criminal network."

"He knows."

"So why me?"

"Because he doesn't want you to join."

Daniel looked terrified now.

"He wants you to destroy the people inside it who won't obey his successor."

Emma stared.

"Who is the successor?"

Daniel whispered:

"Lily."

Emma stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

"No."

"I had the same reaction."

"She's eleven."

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"Emma, listen."

"No."

"Voss built Red Cedar around dynasties. Families. Leverage passed through generations."

Emma thought of Warren.

Daniel.

Marcus.

Rachel.

Children being shaped by parents who needed obedience more than love.

"Why Lily?"

"Because she's my daughter."

"That makes no sense."

Daniel looked at her.

"Voss believes I am his son."

Emma stopped.

For several seconds, the kitchen was completely silent.

"What?"

"My mother had an affair with Samuel Voss before she married Warren."

Emma stared.

"Warren may not be my biological father."

"Does he know?"

"Yes."

"Does Marcus?"

"No."

"Rachel?"

"Maybe."

Emma sat slowly.

Daniel continued.

"Voss doesn't see Lily as Warren's granddaughter."

He swallowed.

"He sees her as his legacy."

Emma's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph arrived.

Lily asleep in a bed at Sarah's secondary location.

Taken from inside the room.

Below it were six words.
