THE WOMAN ON THE STAIRCASE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - the trap set for midnight

Julian Cole entered the story like a ghost.

No current driver's license.

No active property records.

No social media.

No recent employment.

He had lived under several names across Europe and South America.

But Isabella found him.

Not physically.

Financially.

Every person leaves patterns.

Julian's pattern was art.

Over seventeen years, companies connected to his aliases had purchased paintings linked to collectors who once did business with Carlo Moretti.

One company had recently bought a warehouse in Stamford.

Vincent, Isabella, and federal investigators arrived Sunday afternoon.

The building was empty.

Almost.

Inside they found boxes containing decades of financial files.

Original records.

Not copies.

Carlo Moretti's records.

Documents proving David Cole had been framed.

Vincent stood in the warehouse surrounded by the evidence of his father's crime.

Isabella watched him.

"You didn't do this."

"No."

"But you inherited from it."

"Yes."

He picked up a ledger.

His father's handwriting filled the margins.

Cold calculations.

Transfers.

False entries.

Vincent closed it.

"I spent my life trying not to become him."

Isabella said quietly, "Then don't."

He looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"It means what you do next matters more than what he did before you knew."

Vincent nodded.

One federal agent approached.

"We also found plans of the estate."

Recent plans.

Security routes.

Electrical systems.

Trust records.

The birthday deadline was circled.

Midnight.

Julian intended to be at Moretti Manor before the trust dissolved.

But why?

Eleanor's challenge would freeze control.

Adrian's fraud would make Vincent look compromised.

Yet Julian had no legal authority.

Unless he possessed something else.

Isabella searched the documents.

Then she found it.

A copy of an unfiled partnership agreement from 1999.

Carlo Moretti and David Cole.

If authentic, David had held twenty percent ownership in an early Moretti company.

That company had later become the foundation of Moretti Holdings.

If David's interest had been hidden illegally, his heirs could potentially claim billions.

Vincent understood.

"Julian wants the company."

"Or settlement leverage."

"Adrian?"

"Probably wants revenge and money."

"Eleanor wanted control."

"Three people using each other."

Vincent looked at the clock.

5:42 p.m.

Midnight approached.

His birthday.

The end of the trust.

The investigators wanted Vincent away from the estate.

He refused.

"If Julian wants something from me, he'll come there."

"That makes you bait," one agent said.

"Exactly."

By eight, Moretti Manor looked quiet.

Federal agents positioned themselves outside.

Local officers remained at the gates.

Mia and Lily were staying in a secure private wing of the hospital.

Isabella returned to the mansion despite Vincent telling her not to.

"You don't take instructions well."

"You proposed to me. You knew that."

He looked at her bare hand.

The ring remained in his study.

Neither mentioned it.

At ten, Eleanor arrived under supervision.

She had agreed to cooperate.

Vincent did not forgive her.

But he needed her.

At 10:36, the power flickered.

Everyone tensed.

Then returned.

At 11:02, a motion sensor triggered near the old garden wall.

Agents searched.

Nothing.

At 11:19, a phone rang inside the library.

Not Vincent's phone.

The old landline.

Vincent answered.

"Hello?"

Adrian's voice.

"Happy birthday."

Vincent looked toward the agents.

They began tracing the call.

"Where are you?"

"Home."

"This stopped being your home."

Adrian laughed.

"You know what your father did now."

"I know."

"Then you know what you have belongs to us."

"No. I know what he did was wrong."

"That's convenient."

"I'll make restitution."

"You think this is about a check?"

"That's usually what people mean when they sue."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Julian doesn't want restitution."

"What does he want?"

"The Moretti name erased."

The call ended.

At 11:41, the front gates exploded open.

Not with explosives.

A heavy truck rammed through them.

Agents moved.

Security alarms sounded.

The truck stopped halfway up the drive.

Empty.

A diversion.

Vincent realized it first.

"The tunnels."

Old service tunnels connected the estate to buildings beyond the north woods.

He ran toward the cellar.

Isabella followed.

Eleanor shouted behind them.

They reached room 27.

The hidden passage door stood open.

Someone had entered from the far side.

Vincent saw a shadow.

Then Adrian stepped into the light.

Beside him stood a man in a gray coat.

Julian Cole.

He looked older than Adrian.

Harder.

May you like

Calmer.

And in his hand was a pistol.
