THE WOMAN IN THE COFFIN / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Message Ethan Almost Missed

At 4:47 p.m., Ethan Cole was still in his office.

His engagement party began at six-thirty.

He was supposed to leave at five.

Instead, he sat staring at a spreadsheet that did not make sense.

Whitmore Development's debt restructuring had been assigned to another team, but Ethan had reviewed enough of the foundation's related entities to notice inconsistencies.

A transfer coded as community housing support had been routed into a commercial land acquisition.

Another charitable grant had ended in a subsidiary that had not filed operating statements in eighteen months.

He had asked Vanessa about it two weeks earlier.

She had laughed.

"My dad's accountants make everything look complicated."

Ethan had accepted that explanation because he wanted to.

That realization bothered him now.

He had spent twelve years finding inconsistencies in other people's financial lives.

He had apparently developed a blind spot large enough to marry.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown secure sender.

He almost ignored it.

Then he saw the first attached photograph.

A document bearing Claire Whitmore's name.

Petition for Temporary Financial Guardianship.

Ethan opened the second photograph.

Proxy transfer.

The signature looked wrong.

The third photograph showed a ledger.

He zoomed in.

His stomach tightened.

Seven foundation transfers.

Three development entities.

Two dates that corresponded exactly with loans Ethan's firm had reviewed.

At the bottom of the message were two sentences.

Please do not tell Vanessa I contacted you.

Come early. Use the rear garden gate.

Ethan called the sender.

No answer.

He called Vanessa.

She answered on the second ring.

"Hey, future husband."

Her voice sounded cheerful.

Too cheerful.

"Where's Claire?"

Silence.

Then a laugh.

"Why?"

"I thought she was staying at the house."

"She is."

"Can I speak to her?"

Another pause.

"She's sleeping."

Ethan leaned back in his chair.

"At five in the afternoon?"

"She's pregnant, Ethan."

"Right."

"Why are you asking?"

"No reason."

"You sound weird."

"I have work."

"You're still coming, right?"

"Of course."

"Six-thirty."

"I know."

"And don't come early. Mom has some stupid surprise planned."

Ethan looked at Claire's message.

Come early.

Use the rear garden gate.

"Wouldn't dream of ruining it."

He ended the call.

Then he contacted an internal compliance attorney named Mara Singh.

Mara answered immediately.

"Please tell me you're not calling about your engagement paperwork."

"I need you to look at three images."

"What images?"

"I just sent them."

He heard typing.

Then silence.

"Ethan."

"Yeah."

"Where did you get these?"

"Claire Whitmore."

"Richard's daughter?"

"Vanessa's sister."

"I know who she is."

"Tell me what I'm looking at."

Mara took a breath.

"If authentic, the transfers are a problem."

"How much of a problem?"

"Criminal, depending on intent."

"And the guardianship documents?"

"That signature looks copied."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning if somebody submitted it knowingly, forgery."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Mara, I need you to preserve this message."

"Already doing it."

"If I call you in the next hour, answer."

"What are you about to do?"

"Go to my engagement party."

"That sounded worse than it should."

Ethan stood.

"Mara."

"Yes?"

"If something is wrong there, I may need police."

"Something is already wrong."

"I know."

He left the office at 5:12.

At 5:33, Vanessa texted him.

Can't wait to see you.

At 5:41, Diane texted.

Drive safely. Big night.

At 5:48, Richard called.

Ethan let it ring.

At 5:52, Richard called again.

Ethan answered.

"Everything okay?"

Richard's voice was warm.

"Perfect. Just checking you're still coming."

"I am."

"Vanessa's excited."

"I can imagine."

"She's waited a long time for a man like you."

Ethan turned into the Whitmore neighborhood.

"Has she?"

Richard laughed.

"Don't get philosophical on engagement night."

"Wouldn't dream of it."

"See you at six-thirty."

Ethan checked the dashboard clock.

5:58.

He said, "Absolutely."

Then he ended the call and parked two streets away.

He walked.

The front of the Whitmore property looked ready for a magazine photograph.

White flowers.

Lanterns.

A valet station.

Caterers.

A string quartet unloading instrument cases.

Nothing suggested violence.

Nothing suggested panic.

That was almost more disturbing than if the house had looked abandoned.

Ethan followed the hedge.

He reached the rear garden lane.

The gate was unlocked.

That made him pause.

Had Claire left it open for him?

Or had someone else?

He pushed it slowly.

Gravel crunched beneath his shoe.

Then he saw the hearse.

He nearly laughed from disbelief.

A hearse.

At an engagement party.

Then came the pounding.

By 6:04, Ethan's future had changed completely.

By 6:06, the coffin lid was open.

May you like

And by 6:07, Claire Whitmore had placed a brass key into his hand and said something he would remember for the rest of his life.

"Whatever they tell you next, assume they've rehearsed it."
