Chapter 4 - The Hearse Behind the Wall

The coffin had not been part of the original plan.
Claire learned that later.
Richard had intended to hide her in the empty gardener's cottage for four hours, confiscate her phone, let the engagement announcement happen, secure Ethan's public support for the family, and release Claire afterward with a story about a medical episode.
But the cottage had been opened that morning for catering storage.
Too many staff.
Too many witnesses.
The hearse was already on the property because Richard had asked a driver to move it from the redevelopment warehouse before an inspection.
Inside the hearse sat an antique presentation coffin scheduled for auction.
When Vanessa opened the rear gate and saw it, she was the first one who said the words.
"Put her in there."
Even Richard stared at her.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Just until the guests leave."
Claire stood between Diane and the wall, unable to put full weight on her left leg.
"You are all hearing this, right?"
Diane looked frightened.
"No."
Hope rose in Claire.
Then Diane continued.
"Not with the lid closed."
Claire understood.
Her own mother was negotiating the conditions of her imprisonment.
Not opposing it.
"Mom."
Diane looked away.
Richard opened the hearse doors.
"No one uses the back driveway tonight."
Claire shook her head.
"You'll go to prison."
Richard gave a bitter laugh.
"For asking my hysterical daughter to rest?"
"You broke my cane."
"You broke it fighting me."
"You forged legal documents."
"Documents you stole from my office."
"I copied evidence."
"Evidence of nothing."
Claire looked at Vanessa.
"Ethan will see the message."
Vanessa's confidence faltered.
"What message?"
Claire smiled despite the fear.
"The one I sent him."
Vanessa grabbed Diane's arm.
"You said she didn't contact him."
"We couldn't find anything."
Richard stepped closer to Claire.
"What did you send?"
"Enough."
"Where?"
Claire stayed silent.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"The key."
Claire's heart stopped.
He knew.
She had found the brass key in her grandmother's old desk six days earlier.
It belonged to Archive Room C at Whitmore Development's former headquarters, a sealed storage room containing original trust records, foundation ledgers, and corporate minutes.
Richard believed the room had been cleared.
It had not.
Claire had discovered boxes of financial records proving years of unauthorized transfers.
She had photographed some.
But not all.
The full evidence remained in that locked archive.
Only three keys existed.
Richard had one.
The property manager had another.
Claire had stolen the third from her grandmother's effects after recognizing the old tag.
She had hidden it in the elastic support beneath her maternity shirt.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Richard reached toward her.
Claire stepped back.
Diane moved between them.
"Not here."
Claire looked at her mother.
Diane was still trying to preserve the appearance of restraint.
That was her role.
Richard used force.
Vanessa used selfish rage.
Diane made cruelty sound reasonable.
"Claire, listen to me," Diane said. "We are going to put you somewhere safe until the party ends."
"A coffin."
"The lid will be open."
"No."
"We'll give you water."
"No."
"You need to calm down."
Claire screamed toward the house.
"Help!"
Richard clamped a hand over her mouth.
Claire bit him.
He swore and jerked away.
Vanessa seized Claire from behind.
Diane grabbed her arms.
Claire kicked.
Pain exploded through her hip.
She nearly collapsed.
Richard caught her.
"Stop fighting."
"Let me go."
"Then stop fighting."
"That isn't how kidnapping works."
Vanessa began crying with frustration.
"Why can't you just let me have one night?"
Claire looked at her sister.
"Because Dad stole millions of dollars."
Vanessa screamed.
"Shut up."
"You know he did."
"Shut up."
"You were going to marry Ethan without telling him his firm was being lied to."
Vanessa pushed her.
Claire stumbled into the side of the hearse.
Her forehead cloth slipped.
Another faint smear marked Vanessa's skirt when she grabbed Claire again.
Vanessa looked down.
Her face became almost unrecognizable.
"I hate you."
Claire believed her.
That was the worst part.
Not that Vanessa was angry.
Not that she was spoiled.
That for years Claire had mistaken indifference for shallow selfishness when underneath it had been something more corrosive.
Resentment.
"Get her inside," Richard said.
Claire screamed again.
This time music started from the house.
A sound technician testing speakers.
Her cry disappeared beneath it.
Richard and Diane lifted her by the arms.
Vanessa took her legs.
Claire fought until she had no strength.
They put her inside the coffin.
She immediately tried to climb out.
Richard pushed her shoulders back.
"Four hours."
"I can't lie like this."
"Then turn on your side."
"I'm pregnant."
"Which is why you should stop struggling."
Diane arranged the lining under Claire's hip.
The tenderness of the gesture was monstrous.
Claire stared at her.
"How can you do this?"
Diane's face crumpled.
"Because if your father loses everything, we all do."
"No."
Claire grabbed her wrist.
"You chose this."
Diane pulled away.
Vanessa stood near the hearse, staring at the stain on her dress.
"Close it."
Diane shook her head.
"No."
Vanessa looked toward the house.
"I can hear staff coming."
Richard looked at the rear entrance.
Two catering workers passed inside, visible through the glass.
He lowered the coffin lid halfway.
Claire pushed it up.
"No."
Richard pushed down.
Claire screamed.
Diane whispered, "Richard."
"Just until they move the equipment."
The lid came lower.
Claire's heart slammed against her ribs.
"No. No, Dad. Don't."
"Then be quiet."
"Please."
It was the first time she begged.
Richard hesitated.
For one second Claire saw her father.
Not the businessman.
Not the tyrant.
The man who once carried her downstairs after surgery when she was twenty-two.
The man who had stayed beside her hospital bed.
She searched his face for that person.
"Dad."
His eyes hardened.
"Don't make this harder."
The lid shut.
Darkness swallowed her.
The latch clicked.
May you like
Claire screamed.
Outside, Vanessa said, "Move the hearse farther behind the wall."
