Chapter 11 - The Train Leaving Without a Schedule

The station named by Rusk had been closed for renovation, but a private platform beneath it remained active. Freight records showed a diplomatic train scheduled to pass through without stopping. Bellmare owned two of its cars.
Rusk demanded Emily arrive with Hope and no visible agents. In exchange, he promised the location of Anna's daughter and the identities of the two missing newborns.
Bell refused the trade. Emily agreed with her and then asked Cole how they would imitate it.
They prepared a decoy carrier equipped with cameras and tracking powder. Hope remained inside an armored medical vehicle three blocks away with Torres. Emily entered the station wearing a transmitter beneath her coat.
Anna waited on the dark platform. Lucy was not with her. She had already contacted the girl's true biological relatives and surrendered temporary custody to federal protection.
“I wanted to run,” Anna said. “For one hour I told myself love made me her mother. Then I heard Linda's voice in my own reasoning.”
Emily took her hand. “You stopped.”
A train whistle sounded in the tunnel.
Rusk appeared beside the tracks holding the little boy in the red coat. The child was about seven and watched everything without expression.
“His name is Daniel,” Rusk said. “At least that is the name his current parents use.”
“Let him go,” Emily said.
Rusk smiled. “You still think release is the same as freedom. Daniel has lived in four homes. Every mother believes he is hers. Every record proves it.”
He demanded the carrier. Emily set it on the platform but kept one hand on the handle.
“Where is Anna's daughter?”
“Inside the Archive, where she has always been.”
Anna raised her weapon. Rusk pressed a device against Daniel's back. A red light blinked.
The train entered the station at high speed. Doors on the Bellmare car opened before it slowed. Armed men leaned out.
Cole's agents emerged from maintenance passages. Gunfire flashed along the platform. Emily pulled Daniel behind a pillar. Anna fired at Rusk, but he jumped onto the moving train. Cole caught the railing of the last car and climbed aboard.
Emily opened Daniel's coat. The blinking device was not an explosive. It was a transmitter broadcasting his location and biometric data.
Daniel spoke for the first time. “He said you would choose the baby instead of me.”
Emily looked toward the armored vehicle where Hope was hidden. “He wanted you to believe love has a limit.”
“Does it?”
“No. Safety has limits. Time has limits. Love does not.”
On the train, Cole fought through two guards and reached Rusk in a dining car. Body-camera footage showed diplomatic files burning in a metal sink. Rusk held a folder marked REBECCA ORIGINAL.
“You arrest men,” Rusk told him. “The Archive replaces them. Vale was replaced before his blood dried on the ballroom floor.”
Cole shot the folder from his hand. Burning pages scattered. One intact page slid beneath a table.
Rusk escaped by uncoupling the final cars as the train crossed a bridge. Cole remained with the separated car and survived the emergency stop. Rusk vanished into the forward section, which crossed the border into a protected diplomatic zone.
The surviving page contained a list of twelve names. Miriam Harper was first. Rebecca Harper was second, marked deceased. Emily Harper was third, marked active without consent.
Hope Harper was fourth, marked pending activation.
Below them were eight women Emily did not know.
The heading read MATERNAL KEYS.
Daniel's DNA matched one of the two missing newborn families, but his age made the result impossible. Further testing showed he was the older brother of the missing infant, not the infant himself. The Archive had used him as bait because his family history connected to the same bloodline.
Hidden inside Daniel's transmitter was a tiny storage chip. It contained a live video of a nursery in Bellmare. A girl of about nine sat on a bed drawing a silver bracelet.
Anna recognized her immediately from infant photographs.
Her real daughter was alive.
A clock on the wall showed the current time.
Then Miriam Harper entered the frame.

She looked at the camera and said, “Emily, Rusk is not holding this child. I am protecting her from him. But I cannot protect both girls when Hope activates.”
The video ended with coordinates in Bellmare and a deadline forty-eight hours away.
